Holds all the dirt! Waterproof - made of “good tarp” material

HNXTYAOB 39"x 39" Extra Large Potting Mat is a thin mat that is light and easy to move around and set up. The corner snaps have a good, tight clutch which keep the sides and ends erect so long as the table or surface is at least as large as the mat. Mine wasn’t which is why I am holding one of the corners in the photo.

My mom is the plant whisperer - as in she could plant what I think is a dead stick and it grows. She could probably get a live plant out of a fake one. She recommended I get something like this to transfer my plants to bigger pots. She knows my tendency for messes. Mom knows best - this got me through dividing and potting a peace lily and re-potting this little plant I got a couple of years ago. No idea what it is, but since it is still hanging in it deserved a bigger home.

I’m a fan of this mat - when I was done, Hubby took it outside and dumped the extra dirt and other organics and washed it off - that’s what you see in the picture: a cleaned mat and Hubby reports it just needed a rinse.

So high marks that I didn’t need to sweep the garage floor after this project, and high marks for waterproof tarp material. Easy to fold and store after it dries. Thanks Mom!

Larger than it first appears

Every year I go crazy at the garden center and then spend hours potting up my purchase into hangers for the front porch, pots for the steps, and pots for the back porch. I love the process, but my 'potting bench's is an old wooden patio table in the barn. It lets tons of dirt fall thru the cracks and is a mess to clean up afterwards.
So I thought maybe this potting mat would help. I got the extra large because the smallest pot I work with is 14" wide, and some are twice that.
Upon arrival, I laughed because it came vacuum wrapped in a package about half the size of a sheet of paper (see first pic next to sprayer for size) and not much thicker. I figured it was surely not going to work for me. But once I opened it, it turned out to be quite large (see pic next to dining chair for size).
It is basically a plastic tarp square with edging stitched on and snaps in 4 corners. The tarp weight is moderately light, but not flimsy. The sides do not side upright crisply like the online photos show, but they do curve up and should help keep the potting mess contained. There is a velcro strap enclosed, I guess so when you're done you can roll it up smaller and tuck it away.
For $10 (at time of the review) I think this is an ok deal, although the materials certainly cost much less. I am looking forward to using it and having less mess this year.

Really Saves time cleaning up the mess of re-potting

I work on a lot of plants and grow my own garden starts in my living room in the spring. It seems i'm always in need of moving one plant to a new pot or filling new seedling starts and it makes a huge mess all over the table or the kitchen floor. This little vinyl mat folds up super small so it stores easily and when I need to I can lay it out on my dining table and put my plants on top of it. It catches all the dirt and debris, and then when I'm done I can fold it and tip the excess stuff back into the soil bag.
This is also really handy for doing kids craft projects on - when they want to watercolor in the afternoon or paint stuff and you don't have newspaper to lay down!

Overall I'm very happy with it. It washes very easily and is convenient. I plan on using it a lot.
My husband is also big into plants so I may get him his own for his little projects around the house that he doesn't want to have to clean up after.

This potting mat, which I ordered in the size “Extra Large 39”x 39”,” arrived folded up nicely flat and compact with a useful Velcro tie around it that is handy for keeping this mat secured out of the way when not in use. The brown, canvas material is not too thick, so it’s easy to handle, but it’s plenty thick enough to keep all moist soil inside. The mat opens up completely flat, and then to raise the edges as walls, you close the snaps at each corner. This allows potting without losing any spillover soil, and preventing huge messes, which I adore. When I’m finished, I can pour any leftover soil back into its container, fold up the mat into its appreciatively compact size, secure the Velcro tie around it, and put it away. I love it!

Not Exactly As Pictured

The pictures in the description either minimize or completely belie the true condition of the corners on this mat. The corners snap together leaving a "V" shaped opening at each one. The material is flexible canvass, so the corners weigh down the sides and cause them to collapse outward. This is where dirt and water escape the mat and dribble onto the floor or counter. I wish they'd redesign the position of the snaps to make a clean square box that keeps the sides upright. That's how the main online picture shows it, but that's not what you get. I can't fault this mat specifically for this design flaw because others I've had are the same. And at the price, I guess it's something I can live with until something better comes along. The tarp material is light but sturdy. The mat is big enough to use with almost any size plant. It folds up neatly into a small rectangle, and a velcro strap is included to keep it in place. But you're probably still going to have a cleanup job on your counter or floor when you're done. If they'd fix the corners it would earn a higher rating from me.

This is basically a tarp with snaps. It will keep your transplanting area tidy, and it it so easy to clean up.

No worries if you spill potting soil and it mixes with spilled water, making mud pies. The mud pies will stay put so that you can carry them outside, empty them into the garden for added nourishment.

Hose it off, dry it in the sun, fold it up for next time.

I think for this price point, this functions quite well. I’m having a bit of an issue with one pair of fasteners staying buttoned, but this still does what it needs to. It’s super convenient and can be folded and put away easilyy. It’s also easily cleaned with a quick spray of the garden hose. It’s saved me from having to clean off a separate workspace. Would love it if they offered an even larger size.
