About this item

A group of mercenaries on an unsanctioned mission survives a plane crash in whiteout conditions in the Tian Shan mountains. The men are accustomed to danger. Now they’re growing accustomed to fear.

Team leader Liev and his band of survivors are stranded in the bitter winds with little hope of rescue—or outlasting the wolves that have scented blood. In the distance is the apparent sanctuary of an abandoned stone fortress. That an ancient bulwark even exists on this forsaken summit is beyond comprehension. So is what lies on the other side of its walls.

From Academy Award–winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Falling Down, chapter one of The Boy in the Iron Box, a blood-chilling serialized novel about an ancient secret that was never meant to be unleashed, featuring exclusive interior artwork. Each chapter can be read or listened to in one breathless sitting.

4.0 out of 5 stars spoiler in the title

This was a quick and interesting read. To be honest, I usually do not like books or stories that have multiples in a series. Mostly because I don’t wanna get to the end and feel like I have to buy or find the next one. But I understand the cliffhanger structure. And I definitely want to know what’s in that box. Even though the title already alluded to it.
The opening took a long time to get to the point of the crash and the isolation. But I did like the ancient, magical, runic direction. This was heading. And attention was ratcheting up nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arctic Survival

Russian Spetsnaz (Special Forces) on a black op without identification for deniability, crash in the arctic mountains wounding one and killing another of their team. They have a radio, but among the mountains it is unlikely to work.

One team member saw a black man made fortress just before the crash. Would they find shelter there?

This is the five star beginning of a story done in segments. Short easy read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but cut short

Good short story. Lots of action and suspense, but no payoff. It just cuts off. I understand this is a series but each part should have some resolution. This was more like a sample chapter. Well written and enjoyable, but I felt it needed some small measure of closure.

This is the first book in the six part series The Boy in the Iron Box and what an intriguing start. Following a plane crash, a group of mercenaries returning from a secret mission find themselves regrouping in a mysterious stone labyrinth surrounded by a pack of hungry wolves.

I love me some Guillermo del Toro!

The first in a series, this gives you a test of what is to come. Very engaging and it went by very quickly. Can't wait for the rest!

    3.0 out of 5 stars It's a start

I knew this was a short story going in, but I didn't realize that it was like 1 or 2 chapters of a book. While I enjoyed getting to know the characters and plot and the anticipation of it all, I was disappointed about where it ended. Yes it makes you want to read the next ones to find out what happens but to me it didn't feel like a short story it just felt like the author wrote a book and is now distributing it in chapters.
I received a Kindle ARC copy from Amazon first reads and I'm eagerly anticipating July so I can get the rest of the series to find out what happens

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a book, not a short story but a first chapter of a book
Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2024
I was quite confused when I came to the “end” of this “short story”. It seemed like it was the end of a first chapter of a book. The characters were introduced, they were at the beginning of an adventure, there was a hint of something they were going to discover, and then a cliffhanger. It was over. I get it that they want you to buy the other “books”, but to advertise this as a book or even as a short story is very misleading. For that reason I would’ve given it one star, but because it was well-written and engaging, I’m giving it two stars. If it had been a real short story with a conclusion it would’ve potentially gotten 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Graphic and Curious

If you do not like graphic scenes, I don't recommend this book. If you don't mind them, then I'm curious to know what happens next in book 2. I'm not one who like war, special ops, etc. type graphic books because if I like a character, I dislike reading about their descriptive injuries. However, the writer has pulled on my strings of desire to know what happens next. The only reason it has 4 out of 5 stars is because of the graphic descriptions. Otherwise, overall this is a well written short story. I have added this writer to my list of list of writers to follow.
