What is Walabot DIY?

Walabot DIY is a cutting-edge wall scanner that takes stud finder technology to the next level. Capable of "seeing" up to four inches into walls, it uses radio frequency technology to locate stud centers, track water pipes and electrical wires, and reveal other objects you need to know about to avoid a drilling disaster.

Walabot DIY 2

Walabot DIY 2 pairs with your iOS or Android phone (see below) to produce a visual image of what’s inside drywall up to a depth of 4 inches (10 cm). Your Walabot DIY 2 shows you the dead center of wood and metal studs, and it’s the only wall scanner that visually detects and tracks the paths of pipes and wires. It even enables you to find pests by detecting movement. Walabot DIY 2 is designed for everyone from home improvement novices to contractors, electricians, plumbers, and carpenters - anyone who needs advanced wall imaging capabilities. With Wi-Fi connectivity, Walabot DIY 2 can also be used separately from your phone – ideal for scanning hard-to-reach areas. It even comes with a built-in rechargeable battery, so it won’t drain your phone. Walabot DIY 2 offers two scanning modes: Images Mode displays a graphical representation of objects hidden in a wall and Expert Mode shows the raw data.

To use Images Mode, hold your Walabot DIY 2 flat against the wall, calibrate the device by moving it in a circular motion, and start scanning. Radio frequency waves will detect objects inside the wall and the data will be translated into images representing wooden studs, metal studs, pipes, and wires.

Absolutely Necessary for your Toolbox

If you are a homeowner, this tool is a must. I spent a lot of time trying to find the center of a stud in my ceiling with a Zircon. I've used the Zircon many times with success, but it wasn't happening this time - finding the center of the stud this time was painful with unreliable results. I wound up drilling where I thought was a stud, only to run into a goose egg. I purchased the Walabot and had a visual center of the stud in 30 seconds. The price stinks, but as most times in life, you get what you pay for. I'll end the boring story and give my pros and cons.

Pros:
1. Visual representation of what's in the wall
2. This newer unit connects via WI-FI
3. Reliable results in seconds

Cons:
1. You have to calibrate by making large circles in the area. If you are a perfectionist like me, it stinks because of the paint sometimes getting scratched or rubbed off. All stud finders do this, but this has the potential to happen in an area that might not get covered. To have to do this on a new wall would be tough.
2. Can't easily tell between a pipe and a wire (still better than what's out there)
3. Having to have to use the stud finder with a phone can turn this into a two person job many times
4. There is maintenance for this unit. You can't let the battery deplete because there is a chance that it may not charge again. I've heard of overcharging, but not the reverse. I will have to set a reminder to charge at regular intervals.
5. The directions say that you have to charge with the cable provided, but don't provide a charger. This is weird and I don't get that - one more thing to have to remember.

Make no mistake, there are more cons than pro's, but it wouldn't even come close to stop me from buying this thing. The device is worth every penny.

This thing works wonderfully. It is annoying that it requires wifi--it means you can't use it in a new place until wifi is up and running.

The diagram view sometimes has trouble with consistently picking up on wiring, but good enough to work with if you take it with a grain of salt and do several readings. Measure twice cut once and all that.

It flags the center of a stud on the screen but theres no marking on the device where its referring to irl. I have to assume center of the device. Seemed to work out, my screw hit the stud but i have no way to tell how accurately.

Completely worthless - DO NOT BUY

I really wanted this to work but sadly it does not. The sales hype for this product made it sound like it would detect items (studs, wires, pipes, etc.) in the wall and then display an image on the screen depicting what item(s) were detected. It also touted the ease of use and the accuracy and laid out lots of 'sales' talking-points that made it sound better than sliced bread. All of these boastful sales talking points are completely false and unfounded. The main problems for me is that for the unit to work it has to be (REQUIRED) connected to the Wi-Fi. What if the house you are working in does not have Wi-Fi or even electricity hooked up? What if the person you are doing the job for doesn't want your device connected to their wi-fi? Beside that the unit has to be calibrated almost every time it is removed from contact with the wall. Calibrating takes a minute or two and wastes a lot of time. It will only work with single-layer new-ish drywall so if the wall you are trying to detect studs in is older or if the walls are a little thicker then you are just out of luck. Conclusion: This Walabot unit is a neat idea IF they ever get one to work like the hype says but in it's current state of development it should not be considered for serious use by either professionals (like by people who do construction work) or even weekend DIYers. It doesn't work well enough to be useful just frustrating. Don't buy one of these.

Perfect for DIYer

I bought this after seeing the item when originally released for android phones and wanted to try it out. I discovered they finally made one for iPhones and bought it for upcoming project. This device discovered studs that I didn’t know were behind the drywall. Made it perfect for me to make small cuts and verify before cutting out the big piece needed. It also told my where the coax was behind the wall as well. Absolutely best purchase for 2023!!!

Awesome product with one minor flaw

This product is a game changer. I wanted one the first time I saw them but took time to invest. Walabot does an incredible job finding objects inside walls. Locates studs, wires, and water lines with ease. Even critters on expert mode. The app works great and never seems to have issues pairing with the device on my phone. Battery life is good and it comes with a nice carry case.

My only complaint is about the Teflon guides on the unit. There are not adequate and can cause damage to the wall if you're not careful. They don't slide particularly well either and bounce around. I did talk to support about this and it sounds like a fix may be in the works. I just added some thin felt feet to mine for now which helps.

i have had mixed success with regular magnetic stud finders - which actually only detect nails, not studs themselves. this gadget works great, and makes attaching things to wall around the house so much easier. No more molley bolts! no more drilling by accident into pipes - yes, i did that once and it cost $1200 to repair - this gadget is a bargain!!!
