5.0 out of 5 stars The Good and the Bad
Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024
Several years ago we moved into a house with two water features. It has been a learning process of getting/keeping those working and clean. Both have a pond at the bottom, one with a large pond and one smaller (pictured). Over the years, I have replaced both pumps (they were old) and tried MANY ways of cleaning them to find the most efficient and easy process. I have purchased smaller pumps and they work, but usually only last one season since it takes hours to empty each one. Last year was difficult and I never got to them, so this year they were GROSS. Also, I have a symbiotic relationship with the frogs. I keep the ponds clean for them, and they provide summer ambiance. So when I say gross - imagine not only decayed leaves, branches, seeds...but a mass of frog sludge. Since my current pump didn't even last through cleaning the larger pond this year, I decided to upgrade to a powerhouse. Enter the Aquastrong 1HP pump. Here are my observations:
Good:
This thing is strong. I did need to purchase the Superior Pump 99621 Lay-Flat Discharge Hose Kit, 1-1/2-Inch by 25-foot (also on Amazon) as the pump can use a garden hose, but I didn't have an extra one and this discharge hose was cheaper than a new hose.
Bad:
It is so strong, I had to hold it at an angle because it wanted to suck the liner of the pond. My pond liner is secured, but it sealed it off the intake with the strong suction. This wasn't a huge deal as it emptied the pond so quickly.
Good:
The outflow was amazing. With the 1.5 inch hose, what normally takes hours took only about 30 minutes.
Bad:
It still gets clogged. If you have found a pump that doesn't please comment on this review and tell me!! When working with water that has a lot of debris in it, that happens. Of course I scoop out as much as I can before I start, but the small pieces are always to issue. Again, I've always had to monitor my pumps to wipe the debris away from the intake and this way no exception. It seemed to get clogged internally a couple times but it would take 30 seconds to work this out and continue.
Good:
Since I was working with super sludgy water, as I cleaned the pond with clean water, it would help dilute the gross water and the pump could get it out. Generally, I am very conservative on how much water I add while cleaning because the smaller pumps took so long to get it out. Since this thing was massive, I was free to use as much as needed to get the rocks cleaned off, which helped dilute the water, and made the pump work easier. Win - win. Cleanest the pond has ever been!

Overall: Yes! Great pump with the added hose - I placed the output hose directly on the pump at a horizontal angle with no additional adapter. Worked fine that way - Hose didn't try and fly into the air as it appears on the product page going straight up. It laid across the yard to the drainage area. When this one dies, I may try the 1/2 HP to avoid the liner issue. If this one lasts through 3 cleanings, it is a break even price wise and made the whole process a LOT quicker.

DISCLAIMER: I don't use this as intended. Regardless, it's doing great, so take from that what you will. Basically, the filter pump for my 12'/30" Bestway pool died and I needed something cheap and fast because it's been boiling outside and there isn't enough algaecide to keep the pool clear in this heat.

I bought this, attached a 1-micron filter bag to the outlet via a metal hose clamp, and dropped it in. This was meant to be a temp solution, but I think I'm going to keep it as my water is now clearer than it ever was with the traditional filter.

This thing is powerful and moves water FAST. At one point the filter bag blew off, and I came outside to see a mini-fountain bubbling up from the middle of my pool. Haven't had an issue with mosquitoes or algae, either, as this keeps the water flowing.

Of course, I unplug and remove it before swimming. It's completely silent underwater too, so I can run it all night without worrying about disturbing our neighbors.

Will update at the end of the season as to whether or not it survives. It's taken 14-hour use stretches with no sign of corroding or slowing down, so I'm pretty optimistic!

We live on a barrier island in Miami, so there’s no avoiding a little flooding with a good rain. This little pump is powerful and pumps out our backyard in no time. It’s super quiet as well. Easy to attach to the garden hose, plug in and it goes to work. Highly recommend.

We are pleased with the performance esp for the cost. We use it to lower our pool. For best results use a larger diameter hose then a standard garden one. When using the standard garden hose it does not work nearly as fast .

Drained my 16,000 gal pool with this. Did a great job. A little slow but steady steam. I really did not think it would last the job, but it did! It took about 2 and half days. It sits flat on the bottom and got all of the water out. I thought I would have to get the last bit of water out with a shop vac, but this little pump sucked everything out. Green slimey algae and all.

This pump has power! I have used this a few times to remove standing rain water from a patio that floods frequently (3” or more) and it clears the situation in literal minutes (5!). Def recommend and may pick up and extra for back up or other areas since we get more rain than ever these days.

To accompany this pump I purchased a plastic hose kit from Lowe’s (Star Systems).

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Performance.

Bought this a a standby for a similar pump by another manufacturer. Frankly this depicts more power than my other one but in fairness prolly only moves about 50% of the volume, the other does. Furthermore, I didn’t open this item, from its packaging, for probably 3 or 4 months since purchase. On opening, the inner packaging, I realised this had been previously opened(and maybe tried).:The repackaging of the actual piece of equipment was so over taped and fastened, it gave obvious appearance of being tried, rejected and returned. In view of lack of power, I can see why. My returns time prolly passed, unfortunately. Avoid this product. Harbour freight has one like my other and at less that half the price Amazon want for this thing. Not happy but hey!!!
