About this item

If you come after the CIA’s most feared assassin, there’s one cardinal rule: Don’t miss.

America is under attack. Thousands lie dead after simultaneous strikes across the country. The day will come to be known as Bloody Monday.

Jason Trapp, codename ‘Hangman’, was a covert operative whose feats became the stuff of legend. He was the tip of the spear—the man his country unleashed when all hope was lost.

Six months ago, someone sold him out. The Agency listed him as killed in action. He lost everything—and
everyone—he held dear.

But Trapp’s not that easy to kill. As his country reels from the deadliest terrorist attacks it has ever witnessed, Trapp’s personal vendetta leads him right back to where he started: duty to his country. The violence, the terror, the assassination of his partner… It’s all connected.

And now the Hangman is coming for the guilty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very exciting!

This was edge of your seat and fast moving. The author showed he seemed to research the places and terminology. The main characters weren't one dimensional and evoked the emotion I am sure he meant to evoke. Ah...justice. The end had a surprise twist. I don't try to figure it out ahead. Just along for the ride. I enjoyed it and will get the next book. I would say this would appeal to military people in particular, but we all yearn for justice no matter the affiliation, right?

Seemed at times a bit of a rip-off of the Mitch Rapp books, even the protagonist's name. But the plot is compelling and the story is well crafted. Very entertaining, I will be reading the next in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Tom Clancy
Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2024
Jack Slater has become my new favorite author. I have now read 15 of his books and am on track to read them all. He writes reminiscent of early Tom Clancy, only better. His books are sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat, cover-to-cover thriller/suspense tomes.

Dark State is his first in a series of 11 (so far) books centering on a swashbuckling special forces operative named Jason Trapp. This book, like all the others, focuses on Trapp's extraordinary warfighting skills and a seemingly singular ability to rescue Western civilization from terrorist/evil state plots. Trapp somehow becomes a confidant and go-to guy of the American president in novel after novel. While Slater does an admirable job of developing his characters you never have to wait long for the next round of action to begin. Slater also seems very knowledgeable of the techniques of warfare, the array of weapons in use and the ins-and-outs of military life and military capabilities. Very believable stuff. Like most novels in this genre, Trapps nearly super-human skills test the limits of credibility but are nonetheless extremely entertaining.

One thing I really appreciate about Slater's novels is that they are all quite long (in the neighborhood of 400 pages hardcopy. I get annoyed with other authors who seem to take a 400-page novel and break it into three books so you have to buy all three rather than a single book.

What don't I like about these books? While not extensive and overdone, there are too many sex scenes, and a few that are brutal and too graphic. Also, too many F and S words. I realize that such language is common and especially among service members, but it does offend my Christian sensitivities. But his writing is otherwise so good that I either gloss over this stuff or in my mind replace words with other words that are acceptable to me.

I highly recommend Slater's books. He has the Jason Trapp series, another series centered on Gideon Ryker (another military guy). and a third series centered on a woman named Blake Larsen who was an Army criminal investigator. He also has an independent book or two.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great spook book!

The book had some great twists and turns as you attempted to figure out whose shoe would fall next. The characters were great, especially Trapp. I wish they would have gone a little deeper into Trapp’s past and future. Would have been great if Dani and he had a fling. Overall, it was a very good book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, but redundant emotional descriptions
Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024
I liked the story. It’s implausible (i hope), but a good read. The author overdoes the emotional causes for behavior, and does it with annoying redundancy. This being the first in the series, I’m hoping successive books lack that flaw because they get in the way of good storytelling —it breaks the flow when the reader has
to stop and think, What? I already know that because the author has said it too many times already.

So, if the author can clean up his storytelling, it could be a great series. I loved the protagonist and want more of him. And I liked the positivity as a counterpoint to the evil that must be overcome at all odds.

So I’m looking forward the next in the series, hoping some editor has schooled the author, and he tightens up his narrative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once you read one Jason Trapped book, you want to read them all!

If you like spies, intrigue, and devious plots that your brain deep dives into, Jason Trapp and some of the side characters are excellent. The plots are a like scary because you can see that they don't lack all reality (something similar may be possible or actually has happened?) but they aren't unduly macabre. These books are well written.
