5.0 out of 5 stars ********* Horrible Upgrade Policy ************
Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2013
I'm of mixed minds about this product. On one hand, it's an exceptional recipe organizer; easy to use and easy to import recipes into.

On the other hand, I feel "ripped off" by their upgrade policy. I paid $53 through Amazon on 16 Sept of this year, just short of two months ago. I also bought five of their cookbooks directly from them. At the time of my purchase, there was no mention of a new version in the works. A couple of weeks ago I received an email to pre-order the "new" version 11 for full price. They answered my query by saying anyone who bought the program after 1 Oct would receive an upgrade.

Even Microsoft has a better policy than that! Would I recommend it? Yes, with the caveat of "buyer beware", make sure there are no upgrades in the pipeline before you plop down your hard earned money.

******************* Update! ***********************************

I have to totally change my opinion on my previous review. Since posting this review, I've been contacted by two senior staff at the company, including the founder. They could not have been nicer, or more helpful. My problems, and concerns, have now been totally resolved.

Customer service has been more than exemplary and I will gladly recommend this product to everyone, knowing that DVO is standing behind their product and willing to help.

I've revised my review to reflect that, giving it 5 STARS.

In addition, I have to tell you there's not a cooking program out there that can hold a candle to Cook'n.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lacks sub-chapters (folders inside folders) in cookbooks
Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2013
I agree with most reviewers that this is intuitive and a great program, but have several reservations.
1) unlike other programs, you cannot create sub-chapters - no subdivisions in your Indian cookbook, for example. You would have to create "categories" that were not cookbook specific and did not reflect that specific cuisine. Unlike every other windows file system, they will not allow nested folders (ie subchapters, and then sub chapters of subchapters, etc). This is fine if you really don't have many recipes or ways you want to classify them, but is a serious failing of the program, especially for those of us in the culinary professions. Their response was that they had no plans to fix this, but would "mention" this to their programers.
2) SLOW, extremely so, on a new and extremely fast computer
3)Updates - While I applaud their frequent updates, the program does this automatically when you open it, without any choice on your part if you'd want to defer til a later time. My internet connection is not fast (Verizon 3g), and this just stops both the program and anything I may want to do such as search for a recipe on the internet. You just have to wait for it to finish, ugh....

1.0 out of 5 stars How Not to Risk Losing Your Favorite Recipies
Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2013
Don't do what I did. I purchased the Cook'n software Cook'n Recipe Organizer Version 10 in good faith to consolidate a life-time collection of paper recipes into a single printable cookbook. The print function failed to work (due to a known error previously reported by others) so I was not able to create a consolidated paper cookbook as originally envisioned. OK, so I decided to just go with an electronic cookbook of my recipes. Approximately 4 moths after the company's "generous 30-day" refund period passed, a Cook'n software update corrupted my active recipe database and attempting to recover from a backup (as recommended by the company) resulted in each of the backups corrupting too. Cook'n technical support was unable to restore my cookbook file so I lost all of the recipes that I had entered into the software (I should have kept the original paper recipes....but the point of buying the software was to eliminate the scraps of paper). The updated software continues to be unusable on my computer. I can enter new recipes using the software, but I am not able to download a recipe from the Internet, select preloaded information for quick recipe entry (units-of-measure, ingredients, brands), calculate the nutritional information for the recipes, nor print a backup of my recipes. My advice: Learn from my mistake. Save your money and your recipe collection by considering an alternative to purchasing this software.
