5.0 out of 5 stars great performance and features

I used photo editing software before, mainly free ware like "gimp" or software that comes with your digital camera. I'm not a power user, I still have to learn how to work with "layers" but so far I've found the basic options, layout and editing tools to be easy to use.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium Service pack 1. Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz with 3.00 GB of Ram, video chip accelerator and 90 GB free space. For other users running vista; my pc has a rating of 3.4

I read other reviewers said the system does run a bit slow during certain operations, the only time I noticed the software to run a bit slow (average 2 seconds) seconds is when I'm making overall changes, changes such as changing the color of the picture to black and white. (also keep in mind, I'm working with 2816 x 2112 or 2+ mega bite size pictures)

The best things about this product are (price and features) I only paid $34.00 with free shipping. I check a local store ad they are selling this software for $90.00.

I never had adobe photo shop, or adobe elements so I cant make a comparison, but I've read people to have problems with elements 6 and for my personal use photo shop is way to costly to consider.

The one thing I could improve is the instructions, the tutorial "learning center" is good, but I wish it had a "show me" button, but I don't know if this is a common feature either.

Everything considered, I give this a 5 star rating, for value and features, features, features. It will take some time to understand how how everything works, but right out of the box I was able to work with the software and fix a few pictures.

Update 12-31-2008

after a few weeks I check the box the software came in. Maybe I paid the old price, but received a new copy that's Vista certified. Anyway, at $60 is not a bad price, microcenter sells the same software for $99. The only reason why I mention the price again is because of my initial review, all the features this product offers makes it a good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT!

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 works well with Windows Vista. One word of advice is to make sure you have at least two gigabytes of memory, that
way the program would not slow you down. I also recommend more than 32 megabytes of video memory. In my case with a video card of more than
200 megabytes I can see the changes when I use the different fixit buttons to correct and improve your digital pictures! This program is almost
as good as Photoshop if you need to adjust the end product of your photographs. It is good for the average photographer, the semi-professional,
or people who take pictures as a hobby. It works well with the Raw pictures mode and black and white as well. Being a photographer for all
occasions I have used it to show wedding proofs and had no complaints. I use it with Vista and like it, I have to admit that for wedding
enlargements I still use Photoshop on a Mac so they can come out as a magazine cover page. In conclusion it is ideal if you do not want to
spend the big bucks for Photoshop to do mainly enlargements, which you need on Portraits to get rid of skin imperfections and the likes.
This product is great for the average user and I will continue to use it as one of my tools in my arsenal of programs and cameras.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best value for photo editing

I had used Adobe Paint Shop a few years ago but found it too slow and not very user-friendly, so I returned it. I also used a beta version of Lightroom, but didn't need it enough to upgrade when it was released. I bought Corel's product (Ultimate version) on sale for roughly 1/10 the price of Adobe's! My friend (who is very serious about digital processing and uses Adobe's Lightroom, Paint Shop, a stand-alone HDR product and Corel Paint Shop) and I compare capabilities of the different products. Here's our current verdict:
- Best at HDR: Corel
- Best at white balance (especially 'blow outs'): Adobe Photo Shop
- Best layout and ease-of-use: Corel (me) vs. Lightroom (my friend, with a more intensive processing methodology)
- Best value: Corel

Other strengths of the Corel package:
- Sharpen
- Clarify (color)
- Niks color effects plugin (especially brightness & warmth)
- Brush strokes effects

Some weaknesses:
- Poor online tech support: I had an installation issue stalled in email for several days before it was escalated to a phone support person who was able to solve it in 2 minutes.
- Layout is still a bit complex and the context sensitivity doesn't always show you what you want.
- Slower to adopt new Camera RAW formats than Adobe.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed

I first downloaded PSP X2 from the Corel web site on the internet. My computer crashed, so I decided to purchase the program. Then I had not used it maybe 5 times, and it locked up and would not even allow the most simple funtions (to crop and edit a photograph). Went to Corel web site download a patch, that only made matters worse, then I could not even open PSP or uninstall it. I used the older PSP and loved it. I'm extremely disappointed in this PSP X2!!! Needs a lot of work & improvements! After weeks (literally) of going back and forth with Corel, I finally have it back on my computer, but I've not even tried to use it. It will open, that's all I can say at this point.

2.0 out of 5 stars problematic copy-protection

I would give five stars for the product. But.

After you install Paint Shop, "Protexis" copyright-cop service sends messages behind your back every time you use the product, and interferes with file copies and other normal operations.

It's a real bummer that nearly ruins an otherwise great product, and is lots of trouble to defeat.
It is not mentioned anywhere in Paint Shop's documentation or sales literature, and doesn't go away when you uninstall.

"Protexis" is a significant resource cost, privacy compromise, and stability risk for a Windows computer. It runs all the time, not just when you use Paint Shop. To say that it doesn't matter is marketing deception.

This sort of trick is usually reserved for cheesy shareware.
