About this item

In this haunting novel about the enduring bonds of womanhood, a young girl weaves together the truth behind her family history and the secrets that resonate through generations.

Eighteen-year-old Alice Ribeiro is constantly fighting—against the status quo, female oppression in Brazil, and even her own mother. But when a family veil is passed down to her, Alice is compelled to fight for the rights of all womankind while also uncovering the hidden history of the women in her family.

Seven generations ago, the small town of Bom Retiro shunned the Flores women because of a “curse” that rendered them unlucky in love. With no men on the horizon to take care of them, the women learned the art of lacemaking to build lives of their own. But their peace was soon threatened by forces beyond any woman’s control.

As Alice begins piecing together the tapestry that is her history, she discovers revelations about the past, connections to the present, and a resilience in her blood that will carry her toward the future her ancestors strove for.

The book is easy to read and goes quickly. The book gives some history of Brazilian culture and I found that fascinating. It's a love story of sisterhood and friendship. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This was a good story, a little slo moving at times but overall worth a read. The characters were likeable.

This was such an interesting read, a group of women who create a code in lace to send secret messages. A curse in a family and an unwanted marriage. I liked the dual timelines but also felt like the present day storyline was an after thought and could have been more powerful.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Intriguing and Captivating Story
Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2024
Angelica Lopes, the Author of “The Curse of the Flores Women” intricately and magically weaves a well written story about Women, Sisterhood, Tradition, Folklore, and Spanish Cultural History. In this captivating and intriguing story, the author vividly and passionately describes the different generations of colorful and dramatic characters, the plot, and the scenery. The Genres for this novel are Historical Fiction, Women’s Fiction, Feminism, with a dash of Magical Realism. The author describes different but related characters in two different family timelines that utilize the symbolic veil that has been embroidered with a secret message through the stitches.

Seven generations ago, the Flores women took this name, because of a “CURSE” that would cause them to be unlucky in love. The women survived on the art of lacemaking, and did well for a while. One of the women in the town of Bom Retiro, used stitches in her embroidery that were a secret message. Another overheard about this “secretive” laced veil.

In modern times, the female protagonist, Alice is a feminist fighting for equal rights for women. She inherits this veil from the family and centuries before. The secrets, betrayals, and tragedy from the past lead Alice to discovering the present and what is needed for the future. I highly recommend this thought-provoking and memorable story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dual story line - the 1918-1919 one is excellent!

I found the writing and English translation written in an engrossing style, seeing the day to day life of young women in Brazil, 100 years ago. This story line caught and held my attention - it was a page turner, even if we all know from the early chapters that things don't bode well for Eugenia. This book includes a little romance, some action, some humor, a wonderful view of the network of women's friendship. Personally, I wasn't as captivated by the present-day, connected story line and felt like the theme of female oppression was a bit forced for Alice. I'd give the story of Ines and Eugenia 5 stars - engaging historical fiction in a rarely-explored time and geographical setting.

This is one engrossing novel. I really enjoyed the character development and learning about another culture and time period. There are quite a few sad moments that made me rage against the injustice, and I'm glad that the author did not sugarcoat these. I also love how the author left the ending on a hopeful note but open for interpretation. I highly recommend this book!

This was an interesting book that I would reread. Although fictional it told the story of what I'm sure was not an uncommon occurrence in that era.
I am not a women's rights enthusiast but a human equality believer. I think any one who is a good person should be treated equal based on their contribution to humankind. It is heartbreaking to think that women or anyone was treated in such an undeserved manner

3.0 out of 5 stars Female empowerment

The story acknowledges the struggle of women through history to determine their own destiny and be seen as something other than the property of the males in their lives. The long held beliefs in a male dominated societies that abuse and imprisonment are appropriate ways to control others thoughts and behavior is contrasted with current trends for self expression.
