I love this game so much and it's very educational, but it doesn't work on my Windows 7 computer. There are many options of compatibility on the computer, but none work to try and open the game. But it's definitely a great game, just doesn't work on many recent computers.

Save your money

Even with tweaking settings it won't work with newer OS's. So unless you have an old computer that still runs Windows 95 or something skip this and check out the site online where there is a compatible download, which I hear works with the new Operating Systems.

I was sad that this wasn't compatible even when I followed the instructions to change the settings on my computer that was supposed to get it to work. (I have Windows 10)

Works with Vista

Don't be fooled by all the reviews here that say that this game doesn't work with Windows XP or Vista. Most of us don't know how to change our program settings off the bat to make it compatible, so that's why everyone's having problems and assumes it just doesn't work. There's another review here that explains one way of making it work in XP, or you can (after installing the game) just right click on it in Vista, go to "Properties" then "Compatibility", then change it to Win 98 and change the setting to run in 256 colors and 640x480 screen resolution. That has ended all my crashes, and made the game run in full screen mode. As far as the game itself, it's decent, though I don't know why it's a "school" version that I purchased for home, but whatever. My kids enjoy it, and the only major difference I've notice in the style of the game from when I was a kid is that there is not a reference book to accompany it, rather it just has it's own search engine within the game that the kids use to look up the clues. I recommend the game and I plan on getting Where in the World when they're done with this one.

Crashes and works terribly on Windows 7 on my Gateway desktop. Uninstalled :(

Won't play on my Windows 7 or Window's XP computer

I have tried this on both of my computers. One is Windows XP and the other one is Windows 7. The windows 7 one is on my laptop computer and it opens the game but it keeps freezing and a message pops up with "debug" option on it every time I play. One my Windows XP one it installs but it won't open no matter what I do. I do not know if I would buy from this company again after all the trouble I have had with this.

What in the world happened to the real Carmen San Diego games?

I used to play this game in the early 90s, and had fond memories of it. I now have a daughter and tried to introduce it to her. The game is now totally different. The progress through the cases is not based on knowledge anymore but on guesses. It was not interesting to my daughter, and she gave up after about 5 minutes. I stuck to it a little longer to see if it got more interesting with more difficult cases, but eventually gave up as well. This new version is boring at best. It seems it is a dumbed down version of the original.

I tried to identify what had happened to the original games. The truth came out on Wikipedia. The company that produced the original series of game, all multiple prize winners, sold the games to another company, who rewrote what they are today and did not bother to change the names. That is pathetic marketing!!!!

Another major issue with the program is that it does not install easily. Out of 4 computers, all updated XPs, only one took it cleanly, the oldest and slowest one that I don't really use anymore. After some work, I got it installed on another one, but it crashed regularly. After investigating the issue, it looked like other people had the same problem. You would tend to think that the bugs of a 20 year old program would have been worked out by now.

I ended up returning the product.

Great Educational Game with a slight glitch on Windows7

I have windows 7 and the game ran on my computer without any modifications (like changing color or settings to windows 2000). The slight glitch is the video of the chief often doesn't show up and it's just the ACME symbol while listening to her voice. But who cares, everything else works fine. It's a great game, nevertheless. My favorite part about the game is the built-in encyclopedia. You can look up almost everything there is to know about every state. The only flaw to that though is that some of the facts may be outdated.

I received my order very soon after placing my order. We set one up game last night and my kid found it interesting and it is challenging for her so I am happy. My sister recommended these games because her children had played them growing up and said they were very educational.

Another disappointment. This program crashes every time my daughter starts to play and doesn't save her information so she has to start all over again each time. Absolute garbage. Who sells defective software? Apparently Gallactica doesn't mind. 3 out of 4 of the Carmen Sandiego programs we bought from them failed to work.
