UPDATE: I'm down to 1 star. I bought a newer phone and am experiencing a serious bug where the STOP button doesn't work. Instead, it just starts playback of an overlapping additional copy of the same pattern (but starting in a different place). Ordinarily, I would report a bug to the developer before giving a poor rating, but unfortunately there is no way to contact the developer-- without some kinds of social media accounts. I don't mind calling or emailing, but I'm not on FB, Twitter, or G+. That is why this app earns my "hate". On the bright side, I will leave the entire text of my positive review below. It is possible you will get it to work perfectly on your device. On my Sony Xperia, running Android 5.02, it is broken.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Combining a drum machine and a metronome, SuperMetronome GrooveBox Pro has a long list of features (and a long name!). It works well on my humble little gingerbread phone. [but not my v5.02 phone]
They got around the issue of timing & CPU issues by adding a "PREPARE" step, which takes a couple seconds, presumably to render the pattern into an audio file that is then played back as a loop. This approach works well, but you can't change tempo or any other settings in realtime while the app is playing. Not a big deal, but you'll need another workhorse metronome for practice that involves lots of tempo changes.
However, where SMGBP shines is that you can program it to play pretty advanced grooves for practice. With up to 17 beats and beats can be divided by 3,4, or 5 (but only one division type per pattern). You can set up several different kinds of sparse or advanced click setups for advanced metronome work. It comes with a good selection of presets. Once you choose your meter & beat division it will filter the visible preset list. The built in sounds are all excellent. Includes access to 'vibrate' as it's own separate track.
There is one major problem with the way you manage grooves (patterns) and sounds. You can save your custom sets, but you can't delete. So if you make a mistake, your stuck with it, unless you delete everything (delete data in the app manager). On the plus side, it includes an exit button so you can actually quit the app. That's a plus on older phones which don't have any way of quitting most apps.
The controls are a little tight, but workable. The slowest tempo is 20, but you can make it go slower by programming patterns that are more spaced out than quarter notes. It is interesting and useful little feature set.
There are other metronome apps that are more powerful for complex and/or advanced work, but this is a great basic metronome/groovebox for fun practice of basic grooves.
