About this item

Good to Know about Bali is a guide unlike any other. It includes a basic lay of the land, health & safety information, tips on traveling with kids, and a highly selective list of ‘things to do’. However, the book is unique in its depth of information about Balinese arts and culture and in its deeply personal insight on how to make your visit more meaningful.

Written with the intention of developing more culturally and ecologically sustainable travel to Bali, you can think of it as a letter from a good friend who lives in Bali, one who wants you to have a safe, joyful and heartwarming visit to this beautiful island.

Wonderful descriptions of the various areas that make up Bali, with cultural and natural highlights of each area. Also, great information about the people, and how to be a good visitor. Well organized. Exactly what I was looking for!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a letter from the best friend you wish you had in Bali

What makes makes this book so indispensable is that it reads like the thorough, well-organized, anecdotal inside scoop to Bali that you might hope to receive in a pre-departure email from a friend who lives there, but inevitably never do. Or at least I never do in a form that is so extensive, yet compact as this. I read the book in a single sitting because I felt I couldn't afford to leave my bedroom in Bali without knowing everything it had to tell me.

Emiko Susilo smartly avoids dwelling on hotels, restaurants, or any other topics in the domain of TripAdvisor and the like. Instead this book's focus is not simply etiquette and customs, but a practical cultural context with which to understand the island and have a symbiotically incredible experience there with the people who call it home. Emiko manages to do this with a conversational specificity all while sharing countless invaluable activities and destinations. In other words, this book not only gives you a lot to do, but a lot of ways to think about and enjoy what you're doing.

I imagine this book being equally valuable both to short-stay vacationers and more longterm explorers. I shouldn't even have to mention it's applicability to those interested in the arts, about which Emiko is one of the most knowledgable on the island.

Don't miss out on this read!

This book is required reading for everyone planning a trip to Bali, whether this is your first visit or your fifth visit to this incredible island. This book provides valuable insight into the culture and people of Bali, which will open up valuable opportunities for the traveler. This is not a list of hotels (which can be found elsewhere) but rather a guide to the arts and culture of the Balinese and an aid to navigate the challenges of this sometimes confusing island. The information ranges from "hot to dress" to "how to drive", important to keep you healthy and happy, and will help you to avoid accidently offending your Balinese hosts and friends. Thanks to the author for sharing her sensitive knowledge gained from living in both worlds!
