5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story

Excellent view of life in the South in the late 1960s. Good portrayal of the animosity dividing the country. A book for anyone who has not lived though that era. A well written book, but not for someone who doesn't like conflict or tragedy.

This is an outstanding book. It shows Baldacci at his very best. Part social commentary and part legal thriller, it is a great balance of both. The points it addresses are profound. It is food for thought for everyone, as well as being riveting and entertaining. But it's far more than just entertainment, it is a mirror of society in America of the 1960s, and sadly perhaps a mirror of today.

I grew up in the 60's and remember the separation of black and white in doctor's offices, bus stops, schools, and other places. This story painted a picture of some of what I remember about that time. This story made you feel caught up in the racism and political aspects of the time. It was well-written and impactful.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING BOOK COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN

I have read most of the books written by David Baldacci but this one was exceptionally good. Probably because it is so true about the Jim Crow South in the 1960s and, sadly, still true to some degree today. I am horrified to see how far the U.S. has NOT come with respect to equalityfor people of color. The book was a page-turning, courtroom drama with a surprising end.

The book is honest and, at times, hard to read but please read it. It's wonderfully written with likeable characters who were very well developed living in an unbelievable difficult time in U.S history.

Bravo Mr. Baldacci!!!!

A Calamity of Souls is an incredible story that tears at your soul and emotions. During our current time of political unrest, this book made me reflect on the differences that still plague our country. I’m hopeful that before I pass, I will truely see our country as the “United States”. This book will bring out many emotions which is a testament to an excellent author.

Bald accident surprised me with this novel.
As I read this, I thought it started off with stereotypical tropes and platitudes. Some of the plot lines were predictable. However, I guess the novel needed them to set the story up.
I enjoyed the story, and Baldacci threw in some twists that I didn't see coming.
I can't wait for a sequel about "DuBose and Lee",

5.0 out of 5 stars Execeptional book by Baldacci

I've read most, if not all of Baldacci's books. They're always well crafted and tell a great story, but this book really resonated with me. The divisions and attitudes expressed in the book are taking place in this country right now, almost 60 years after the setting in the book. We must take a serious look at ourselves, not only as individuals, but as a nation, and focus on what unites on, not divides us. The was certainly the underlying message of the novel, and Baldacci presented it brilliantly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good legal novel

This was a good legal novel that was set in the late 1960’s. The underlying theme is racial discrimination (also set in the South). I gave it a 4 rating as opposed to a 5 because it was overly “preachy” At times. I thought the author had made his point regarding acceptance, kindness & etc and didn’t need to get “preachy.”
