He’s cute! It’s a really short crochet project (a few hours) and really cute! I love his little tail :) There is a bit of shaping in here for people who are interested in learning about that. I think this kit is better for people who’ve done a few kits because the instructions are quite “bare bones.” I liked it, but I speak as someone who has completed sixty-one crochet projects from kits and has been crocheting for nine months :)

Stitches/Difficulty
Chain Stitch
Crochet in the Round
Double Crochet **
Magic Ring
Single Crochet

Slip Stitch
Most Rounds in a Part: 14
Most Stitches in a Row: 30
The more asterisks, the less the stitch appears in crochet kits. It’s a very short project that is perfect for beginners. There aren’t many stitches to learn (just one more, the dc, than the most basic set in a kit). I guess if it was a college course it’d be “Crochet 101: Basics and Introduction to Shaping.” XD The pattern is good for a beginner, but instruction materials are not so I’d recommend this kit after you’ve finished a couple other similar ones.

Instructions
Paper: These are the huge, long, single sheet of paper kind of instructions. I don’t think it would be easy to finish this project with just the paper instructions if this is your first time. It’s all barebones instructions and there is any real information about counting or other crochet concepts. If you’ve already done a crochet kit or two, then it’ll be easy for you. They don’t tell you exactly where to put in the eyes, legs, wings or beak. There is just a picture (it is possible to count the rows from the picture, but it’s a bit hard.

>>Tip: Don’t forget to install the safety doll eyes in the head before row 13! The instructions don’t mention when to put them in.

>>Tip: You’ll have to do more than transpose the dec to incs, if you want to sew the head and body as one piece because of the shaping. I think you might have to follow the row instructions backward (from left to right), too…but I’m not sure. I just tried to do it the way I usually do with the dec to inc substitution and ended up with the duck’s tail in the front after I’d already put in the safety doll eyes.

Video: The QR code (no URL printed) takes you to a website where you have to click on the words “crochet method” (not underlined or highlighted) to get to watch a commercial before the duck video starts. I took a star off for commercials. The row instructions appear centered at the top in a black font (but only sometimes. It’s not there for the beak). The hands crochet very slowly. There is no sound to the video. I don’t think it would be easy to crochet this from the video on your first time, either. They don’t tell you to put in the eyes before you finish the head here in the video either. I did check the QR codes and they all work :)

Materials
The yarn is the super soft kind. I like working with it. I had a whole bunch of yellow yarn left over and some pink. I wish they’d included enough pink yarn so I could’ve made his feet pink. I think that would’ve looked cuter. The crochet hook is a 2.5mm one with an ergonomic silicone grip. It’s the grippier, slower kind for beginners (helps make it so the yarn won’t slip off). I used my own needles so I could work faster. They include the backs of the safety doll eyes in this kit :) The safety eyes have a lot of flash and look messy, though (see closeup). They also have both plastic and metal tapestry needles (I really like that I got a choice!).

What I Did Different
I used my own safety doll eyes because I wanted them to be green. I also placed them on a different row (between r9 and r10). I used the yarn tails to make a tuft on top of his little duckie head :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Too hard

I know this is for a beginner or a child but I found this to be difficult. I looked at the directions and then scanned the QR code to watch the video. I could not figure it out. These do look really cute! If you have the patience and an eye for this I’m sure it’s a great project just not for me. I will be returning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Wooble-alternative!

I eat up these Wooble-esque crochet kits - they're cheaper and usually have more unique designs. This starter set is no different - and this is really three kits in one!

It is super easy for a beginner - there are both pictorial instructions and video tutorials available. The kit comes with everything you need to make the whole menagerie depicted. I had plenty of yarn and stuffing left over, and you can always reuse stitch markers and crochet hooks!

Such adorable little amigurumi, and you can always add the patterns to your repertoire of "Things You Can Crochet"!

It’s really friendly for the beginners to use, I can’t really read the steps but they do have the videos for me to watch and learn how to do it, things comes out super cute and there are multiples on it, after finish all the dolls, I believe my skill will improve a lot. Really recommend to the beginners.
