About this item

“As David Robson makes plain in this compelling book, the way we think about the world can profoundly shape how we navigate it. Based in science and packed with smart advice, The Expectation Effect will expand your mind - and maybe even extend your life.” (Daniel Pink, New York Times best-selling author of When, Drive, and To Sell Is Human)

A journey through the cutting-edge science of how our mindset shapes every facet of our lives, revealing how your brain holds the keys to unlocking a better you

What you believe can make it so.

You’ve heard of the placebo effect and how sugar pills can accelerate healing. But did you know that sham heart surgeries often work just as well as placing real stents? Or that people who think they’re particularly prone to cardiovascular disease are four times as likely to die from cardiac arrest? Such is the power and deadly importance of the expectation effect - how what we think will happen changes what does happen.

Melding neuroscience with narrative, science journalist David Robson takes listeners on a deep dive into the many life zones the expectation effect permeates. We see how people who believe stress is beneficial become more creative when placed under strain. We see how associating aging with wisdom can add seven plus years to your life. People say seeing is believing but, over and over, Robson proves that the converse is truer: Believing is seeing.

The Expectation Effect is not woo-woo. You cannot think your way into a pile of money or out of a cancer diagnosis. But just because magical thinking is nonsense doesn’t mean rational magic doesn’t exist. Pointing to accepted psychology and objective physiology, Robson gives us the practical takeaways we need to improve our fitness, productivity, intelligence, and happiness. Any listener who wants to take their fate into their own hands need only pick up this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be careful with your expectations of this book

I love psychology and mindset books and I had high expectations for this one. It’s a solid book but it runs with the academic side a bit too much if you are looking for an “easy to implement “ read. It’s good, very good but great, in my eyes, is a book that can change your world. This book isn’t it, for me.

It seems we don't all view the very same things in the very same way. This shows how and why we usually get what we expect in terms of results for efforts. This makes life better in many ways. I'm only halfway though it but HIGHLY recommend it to those who want to keep a good view for positive outcomes

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books of 2023

I really enjoyed this book. It's long and can be a bit dry sometimes, as others have mentioned. I learned a lot and have already started implementing things from the book. It opens your eyes and answers a lot of questions. I'll read this one again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!

We’ve been very interested in subjects relating to the mind/body connection. This is a wonderful book, well written, with good scientific support and explanation. I especially love how at the end of each chapter he does a nice summary of the key points with suggestions. It’s fascinating to see how much your expectations can impact every aspect of your life. The placebo effect is very interesting and an untapped resource. This book helps you start to bring more of the brain’s abilities into play. If you’ve read any of Mario Martinez’s research on aging, this will tie into that approach.

This is an excellent book, the kind you want to recommend to your friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely fascinating

Absolutely fascinating. The studies and stories help bring the book to life. Of particular importance is the chapter on aging. Our society has got to stop denigrating and making fun of people who are older, and we’ve got to let up on ourselves.

And don’t skip the introduction or epilogue.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great information, but too long

Great information, interesting stuff but it could have been 10 pages and covered all the bases. Yep I went there. There were so many studies, groups, tests, over and over it was a hard book to stray awake while reading even though I was fascinated by the subject. I would have quit it but I wanted the knowledge. After finishing it I feel like the knowledge was drowning in tests. Did I learn anything from this, yes but not enough for the time it took to get it. Ten pages or less would have covered it all
