5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value!

This bass gets 5 stars relative to its price. I have been playing guitar and bass professionally for over 20 years. I have two other 4 string acoustic basses but bought this one because of the 5 strings, positive reviews, and excellent price. The other basses are an Olympia, which has a really neat design, and a Fender that was pretty expensive...around $800 if I remember correctly.

This bass has a huge body, which I believe helps its sound quality immensely. It dwarfs the other two basses I have and two jumbo acoustic guitars I have. It measured 18" lower bought, 21.25" length, and 4.25" depth. The jumbo 7 string guitar I measured was 16.25", 20", and 4" respectively. That makes for a large difference in interior body volume. I expected the low B to be either weak in volume or "boomy", but the bass actually has a very strong and balanced sound across all 5 strings.

I also liked the thin satin finish. I think a thinner finish contributes to a better sound, as the top can vibrate more freely. The satin is very attractive to me. Woods look good with a nice spruce (?) top and mahogany back and sides. The top is obviously laminated and I guess so are the back and sides. Laminated wood tends to be stronger and more durable, so for this monster size bass with lots of string tension it is probably a good choice. Solid wood probably sounds a little better, but for $200 you are'nt getting anywhere close to solid woods for that price.

The pickup works fine and sounds very much like the bass acoustically. I didn't notice the tone slider change the sound very much, but that doesn't really matter as it sounds good as is and you always have tone controls on the amp. The output is weak, so depending on your amp and how loud you want to play, you may start running out of knob travel. I have a nice Fishman preamp somewhere I can always use if need be, although probably not. With an acoustic bass you probably aren't going to play too loud anyway, because the guitar will start to feed back.

Overall I am extremely happy with this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Product for Good Price!

Never bought a guitar online before, but I'm very pleased with what I've got! Quick delivery; it was delivered a day early. No buzz on the frets, and clean deep sound. Of course it's not the best quality bass out there, but for the range of quality and price that it is, you couldn't find a better guitar! Great for practicing, campfires, or church singings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the lower cost acoustic basses

I played a few at the local big box music stores. They all buzzed and rattled.... The Dean came out of the nicely package box and had some lite fret buzz in a couple of places, but overall sounded great with nice real growly lows. I adjusted the neck on mine a bit and eliminated the fret buzz and maintained the intonation. I also replaced the somewhat sub-par strings with a set of half-rounds to maintain the growl but lighten up on the feel and bite when played hard. Now it plays perfect. Played with a few friends and their acoustic guitars all un-amped and the volume from the body matched nicely. To get this acoustic response the body of the guitar is quite large and can be a bit of a bear to hug while sitting. Standing is preferred for my average stature. To amplify, buy a preamp peddle to boost the piezo bridge pickup before you go into your bass amp or sound board, ... it needs the extra boost. Once pre-amped it sounds fine with low bass response. Get the behringer pedal and you can sound shape it a bit before amplifying or recording. I'm completely happy for the price, nice quality and sound.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sharp frets and buzzy...
Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2018
Ok when I first got this I was a bit shocked how big the body of this bass was...so if you’re a big person this wouldn’t be a problem. It didn’t have the front strap button which you have to attach your strap on the head of the bass which made it very awkward to play. But I played for a few minuets and certain frets I think it was the 5th and 10th frets we’re really buzzy, but other than that it was pretty good until I looked at the side of my left had (in between my index and thumb) and it was full of cuts! Every single fret on this bass had sharp edges!! One cut even made me bleed which was when I noticed my hand itched. This was the only 5 string acoustic I was looking at on amazon, but on Thomman.com is where I got my new bass and it’s very nice

2.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for...If you're lucky

You get what you pay for... Same old story, but slightly worse.
Packaging: The bass came in a the original box from Dean inside the Amazon box. The Dean box had signs of shipping damage, and should not have made it into the Amazon box. The bass itself had has a couple of 1" or so gouges in the finish (on the bottom) presumably from shipping. The bass wasn't detuned for shipping as it should have been. All in all, one star for shipping.
Fit\Finish: This is one of the worst I've ever seen. Cosmetically it's not that bad, but up close, it's like they laid on one coat of finish, let it get coated in dust, then laid on another coat without sanding before or after. There are chips of wood hanging inside the sound hole.. it's less professional than one should expect even for a $200 guitar. 1 star for fit and finish
Sound: The sound actually isn't that bad. It's about on par with the price... maybe slightly better. Once plugged in, it's equally mediocre. It passes for something to bang on with friends in the living room. If you're looking for something to gig with; look elsewhere. 3 stars for sound.
Playability: 3 stars here as well. It's actually pretty playable out of the box. Sure it needs a setup, but after that, it's fairly comfortable to hold and play.
Overall: If you're getting something for your kid to learn on, or just to sit around the living room and play a few songs, this will do. But don't expect to be impressed. This is a bare-bones tool that does it's job and doesn't go above or beyond.

3.0 out of 5 stars Plays well...Sound uneven
Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2013
The Bass has a good fret board playability, but sound is uneven from low strings to the high strings (volume is loud on E,A strings and soft on D,G strings). One of the screws was missing out of the volume/tone panel and the transducers on the high strings was loose inside the body upon arrival. The old saying..."you get what you pay".
