A Town & Country Must-Read Book of Summer 2024!

"A delightful and sharp-witted tour through a lifetime’s worth of travel exploits and misadventures. . . . Readers are bound to catch the travel bug."Publishers Weekly

In this hilarious and often touching collection, the New York Times bestselling author, television writer, and producer takes us with him on travels across the globe.

Gary Janetti has gained a devoted following, with a huge audience on social media, and two bestselling collections of essays under his belt. His new collection will prompt laughter but also delighted recognition as Janetti tackles the absurdity and glory of travel.

In We Are Experiencing a Slight Delay, he shares stories of his varied trips around the world. Tag along as he enjoys an unexpectedly transformative stay at a rigorous Italian spa where he and his husband go from deep grumpiness to exaltation. Take a ride on the Orient Express to Venice and discover a surprising side of London, including a hilarious dinner with actress Maggie Smith. And pull up a deck chair to watch the entertainment as Gary embarks on a family cruise on the Queen Mary 2.

Interspersed with recollections of his trips are personal meditations on dining alone as well as journeys to such diverse destinations as Mykonos, Australia, a Noma pop-up, and other glamorous spots. Gary is unabashedly frank about his very exacting travel needs, and delivers practical advice on all aspects of the traveler’s life, from very precise packing instructions, suggestions on how to get upgrades, and restaurant and hotel recommendations in his favorite cities.

Aspirational, charmingly acerbic, and as diverting as the best vacation can be, delivering both laughs and moments of sharp recognition, Gary’s funny collection is the perfect getaway companion, for both seasoned nomads and curious armchair travelers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun to Travel with Gary!!!

Traveling with Gary is the perfect blend of humor, tour guide tips, living vicariously through someone with an unlimited budget who travels on a budget, and seeing the world through the eyes of a great human who treats everyone who he meets on his journey with kindness. This is the perfect book to read a chapter at a time, except for the fact that it’s so good that you’ll really end up binge reading it. Wonderful!

Absolutely loved this book. Every story is hilarious and often unexpectedly touching. Gary has the incredibly rare (and annoying) talent of being able to make you laugh out loud and then tear up a sentence later. One of my favorite stories centered around an alcohol, gluten, and caffeine-free wellness retreat in Italy, exactly where you want to have all three of those things (writes Gary - “It's like taking someone to Waikiki Beach and letting them enjoy it from inside a shipping container”). Other favorites: a trip on the Orient Express he compares unfavorably to riding the LIRR, a trip to Mykonos where he meets his eventual husband, and a chapter dedicated to eating at restaurants alone. I’m not taking a vacation this summer, but reading this book outside, with a glass of wine in my hand? Well, it felt like one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gary Janetti is a charmer

If you follow Gary Janetti on IG, like me, you might remember some of these travel tales from his nearly-love updates. And it only makes them better (and funnier). There are great travel tips here, and some of the most wonderful places to go, but it's the heart in the book that makes this completely charming and engaging. I laughed out loud many times (sorry, airplane seat mates...at least I didn't try to chat), but was touched enough to cry some times, too. This one's a keeper.

I have now read all three of Gary's books and I cannot wait for him to write his next one. Reading his essays is pure joy. In fact, I hear his voice in my head as I read. He tells a story like no other and brings you with him to all his favorite places. As someone who isn't able to travel, I do so vicariously through Gary and I so appreciate it.

A few pages in, I asked my self why I was reading this book. BUT after another few chapters/essays... I STILL was left wondering why I was reading this book? But it end up being kind of fun, semi informative and thankfully quick. The book should have come with a warning, "I eat WD burgers"- FOR SHAME!

Wow- what great writing! How have I never heard of this author before???? As far as books go, I am VERY difficult to please and extremely picky. (Kinda like Gary with his hotel rooms.) I read a ton of memoirs and humor. Gary's writing style is just **fabulous**. Gary takes you through a story and there's always a wonderful punch line at the end. You can visualize yourself in the scenario.

Probably my favorite part was when he was talking about Sydney, Australia. I have been there and I know the exact hotel he's referencing. It was funny when the zookeeper let him visit with the koalas (notice I did not say "bears"). I also loved the story of the cruise with his family and having the stateroom above the foghorn.

The way he tells stories, it's like you're chatting with a super-sarcastic, hilarious friend.

I was not at all surprised to learn that he used to write for my favorite show "Will and Grace."

In writing, as in life, it takes a lot of effort to look effortless... and that's *exactly* what Gary achieves. It is the equivalent of watching a really beautiful ballet, but with words. *sigh*

I highly recommend this book.

PS- please keep writing books, Gary!!!
