Like many people, I experienced a dead pack-in controller and needed a replacement. I suspect there's something to that - the console controller may skimp on quality in some of its versions. But these add-on controllers have been perfect so far. Overall I think this is the best DualShock in history, although I do think it makes some steps backward.

    Pros:

-Unlike the Xbox equivalent, the Sony DualShock puts the D-Pad first. This is great for some genres, such as fighting games. It's potentially less good for others, such as shooters. Overall though, the Dual-Shock definitely has one of the better d-pads among its competitors.

-Triggers are shaped correctly. Sony shaped its triggers backward on previous controllers, so when you pulled, the controller could squirt out of your hands. Now the triggers are shaped correctly, fixing this longstanding issue.

-Battery life is good-but-not-great. I can easily get a day's play on one charge, but it does have to be recharged daily. Avid gamers might actually need some extra controllers charging all the time just to keep up.

    Cons:

-Battery cannot be replaced under warranty. Sony hopes you'll throw the controller in the garbage and buy a new one. It's fairly simple to change the battery is you have basic tools (drivers and spadgers), but Sony would still prefer you to spend more with them than service yourself.

-The touchscreen is a gimmick. It doesn't get used in almost any game I play, nor would I want it to be.

-The on-controller speaker is a gimmick. Annoyingly, there is no universal way to switch this off. Many games, such as "Project CARS", play certain sounds on the controller at a constant volume no matter how your TV is set. That's really dumb. The only way to fix this is to use a headset with your controller, which I don't bother to do, so I just try to avoid games with this annoying feature.

-The light on the front of the controller is mostly annoying to me. It lights up my room when I'm playing at night, which is just annoying in most games. I went into the menu and turned the light to its minimum setting, so now I never notice that it exists except for that moment when I look to see if the controller turned on.

-The "Share" and "Option" buttons are very poorly placed. You need to wedge your thumb into the nook of the controller, and many games put an important menu on the Options button, so you have to access it all the time. That's really annoying. I'd rather have these buttons on the face of the controller, than have the buttons so hard to access.

    Overall:

This controller has some serious flaws, but considering the pluses - like the correctly shaped triggers - I'd still say it's one of the better DualShock controllers ever made. Definitely worth an upgrade for anyone - even PC users - looking for a great controller.

The controller was completely fine. It felt a little stiff at first, but that was probably because it was newer/not as used. It connects, and had no drift.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you game a lot, you will notice a difference

This new version of the DualShock controller is definitely worth replacing your old ones with. I do a lot of gaming (4-8 hour sessions, 5 days a week) and my old version controllers were starting to get pretty worn out. I was looking to hold out for the new E-games endorsed controllers that are dropping later this year but when I heard this was available and read the specs I thought it would be worth trying them when they dropped to $40 sale price. What was appealing to me was the longer battery life and ability to "hardwire" the controller with a microUSB for basically 1:1 input (no input lag)

A few notes about this controller:

    1. Hardwiring a PS4 is EXCELLENT and long overdue. If you are a casual gamer or play games that do not require a lot of precision movement, you may not notice a difference. If you play a lot of FPS or fighters at a high level, you will notice a difference with this controller. Playing Destiny last night I found that the trigger pull to my gun firing was instantaneous. Turning was quicker and more precise, I even noticed being able to move through menus quicker. My old controllers must have been more worn out than I thought.
If you are going to hardwire, a few important things to note:
    - Make sure you go into your "Device" settings in your PS4, then under Controllers make sure to select it to run off of USB instead of Bluetooth. This only works for this new gen Dualshock controller, not the old ones.
    - Make sure you have a microUSB cable that is long enough for your gaming / seating setup. I generally like to buy things that are bigger than necessary so I pulled the trigger on a two pack of 10' long cables for like $8 ([2-Pack]Micro USB Cable,10FT/3M Extra Long Type A Male To Micro-B Male Charging Data cord For Samsung Galaxy S4 S6 S7 Edge Note 4 5 LG G3 G4 Android Canon Nikon camera MP3 player. I am glad that I did, because the risk you run when hard wiring is the cord getting pulled and you going dark during a game. I did not have this happen while playing but when I put the controller down for a quick break it disconnected. Note for if this happens: Make sure you plug the controller back in and hold down the PS button to reconnect it. So the theme here is if you're going to hardwire make sure you get a cord that has plenty of slack for your seating setup.

    2. The buttons and joysticks have a nice, improved matte feel to them. The triggers feel crisper and have a slightly heavier trigger pull (again, probably more noticeable due to my old ones being worn out). The joystick material feels a lot more durable and for some reason they seem raised slightly higher than the old controllers. They probably aren't (it could be that the material is new and hasn't worn off yet) but that definitely made in game movement easier.

    3. The small light bar shining through the touch pad on top is a nice touch but frankly I don't play many games where the light bar is that important to to me.

I can't comment on how much longer the battery life is as I've only played it in hardwired mode but that would be a nice added benefit for those times I do go wireless (which I may never do now). If you're on the fence about this and you do a lot of gaming, it is definitely worth the investment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Replacement controller

I bought the jet-black version of the PS4 controller as the controllers that come with the initial purchase of the console easily crap out over the course of a couple months with the most awful stick drift that deep cleaning can't fix.
I don't think I have had any issues with this controller since buying it and I sometimes use it for controller-compatible games on PC. I enjoy this controller a lot, as someone who's also played Xbox, I like the design of these controllers a lot more. It feels better and more comfortable in my hands, compared to the beefiness and compactness of an Xbox controller, due to its slim structure. I haven't experienced stick drift with this controller compared to the original controller I had, which is a plus. It's also been able to withstand my clumsiness of dropping it a couple of times without issue as well. Overall, it's a great quality controller that is durable; take good care of it and it will last longer.
