Soulmates, Doorways, and Other Unruly Magic is a novella of the Dowser series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. It contains potential spoilers for every novel in the Adept Universe, and — at minimum — should be read after all the Dowser series books. But it will be better enjoyed if read after the second book in the Archivist series. The ideal reading order is as follows:

    A baker, a vampire, and Kandy walk into a wine shop.

    This won’t make much sense if you haven’t read previous books in the dowser universe. A magical doorway appears in the bakery. Those in the bakery walk through it, first into a nearby wineshop, only not. The place they end up is not entirely as it should be. I will stop describing plot here, as more would be spoilers.

    This is a short, but sweet adventure with the Dowser and friends. It’s a cupcake of a story. If you enjoy Meghan you will probably like this. More please.

    I enjoyed this short story into the lives of Ket, Kandy and Jade. It was fun to see them in everyday situations and watch as they get pulled into a brief adventure. I must admit to being surprised and left hanging with my mouth gasping in need to know more. It is a profound need.

    As the completionist that I am, I picked up this short bonus story to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first book. This book gives you a flavor of the chaos in Jade’s life and maybe even a “normal” day in the life? What it does not do is give you a huge story with resolution. A happy diversion, just like for the characters.

    We join Jade, Kandy, and Kett as they sit around “bored” and waiting for the next crisis. Jade is boredom baking, Kandy is fastidiously ignoring her pregnant state, and Kett is being stoic. As weird as it would be for anyone else, for these three a magical doorway showing up in the middle of the bakery is not too strange. It is, however, an easy diversion. They silently agree to choose danger over boredom and away they go!

    There’s a bunch of twists and turns that truly put our main characters in peril, but since this is just a teaser, not too much of major significance occurs. There’s a little bit more understanding among the three, the start of something big, and maybe a new appreciation for boredom by the end.

    I can't get enough of the powder series. It was good to spend time with Jade Kandy and Left but too short! I hope something else is coming soon!

    I love the author’s books but this was quite short for a novella and just suddenly ended with no explanation or resolution for the events in the story. It felt like a snippet of a longer book rather than a stand alone novella. That’s fine if you know that going into it but I was shocked when it suddenly ended. A bit disappointing but I’ll buy the next one.

    Meghan Ciana Doidge! You can't leave it like that... We need another story that give us info on Earth 42's gate keeper. This series us my all time favorite. Every character, every fish, everything about it us just amazing. Jade is my favorite FMC
