About this item

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, must stop a disaster of world-shattering proportions in this exhilarating entry in the #1
New York Times bestselling series.

In the supernatural realms, there are creatures who belong to winter. I am not one of them. But like the coyote I can become at will, I am adaptable.

My name is Mercy Thompson Hauptman, and my mate, Adam, is the werewolf who leads the Columbia Basin Pack, the pack charged with keeping the people who live and work in the Tri-Cities of Washington State safe. It’s a hard job, and it doesn’t leave much room for side quests. Which is why when I needed to travel to Montana to help my brother, I intended to go by myself.

But I’m not alone anymore.

Together, Adam and I find ourselves trapped with strangers in a lodge in the heart of the wilderness, in the teeth of a storm of legendary power, only to discover my brother’s issues are a tiny part of a problem much bigger than we could have imagined. Arcane and ancient magics are at work that could, unless we are very careful, bring about the end of the world. . . .

Wow. I cannot express how much I love this series.and how much the love story between Adam and Mercy is just so EPIC. I love the magical aspects of this series as well as great character development. The story lines are so intricate and truly suck you in. I could not put this down and now that I’m caught up I’m so sad I have to wait for more. Absolutely OUTSTANDING addition to the series.

Patricia Briggs brought so many if our favorite characters together and added a couple new ones in Winter Lost. She wove a perfect story, intertwining characters, plot, history, mythology, and Kerry's unique abilities and genealogy into a seamless story. If you have read the previous Mercy Thompson Hauptman books, then you will love the solution she created to heal a problem and, although thus book us complete in itself, we are left knowing that there is more Mercy to come.

I highly recommend thus book as a must read. Thank you, Ms. Briggs, for continuing to bring fantastic and fantastical stories to light!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Mercy Thompson series

I thoroughly enjoyed Winter Lost, both on Kindle and on Audible. It was well worth both the reading and the separate listening. Ms. Briggs is, I think, at the top of her game in this book.

The structure, made up of chapters and interludes, with shifting narrators and perspectives, was effective. The blend of mythologies and folk tales—Norse, Celtic, Germanic, Slavic and Native American—was skillfully handled. Ms. Briggs’s impressive imagination created a satisfying whole from these many parts, a thoroughly realized world and an engaging story centered around characters who continue to grow and change. Brava!

4.0 out of 5 stars It’s a solid Mercy book

I’d like to preface this review by saying it is for long time fans of the Mercy Thompson books. This book is fast paced, has a few (kind of obvious) plot twists, and lots of action. If this was written by someone other than Patty I would say it was an amazing book. But Patty sets the bar high and this one lacks the depth and richness that her earlier books have. That’s not to say that this isn’t a solid addition to the Mercyverse, it totally is, but there’s nothing new. Instead of getting intimate details and conversations with the characters we love, we get brief updates that feel like check marks on a list. We’re told things instead of getting scenes and little touches that make Patty’s books so unique. I wasn’t invested in the new characters and didn’t feel like the old ones were fleshed out well. The changing pov’s and interludes feel less edgy and more like filler. Now don’t get me wrong, Patty is so talented that her filler is what most writers spend a lifetime trying to achieve. It just feels a little disappointing after waiting so long for this one. I read this one in one day, unlike the earlier books that took three to five days to get through. Overall, I’m glad I bought it.

Lots of twists and action. Lots going on with everyone. Would like to have read more about what happened in New Mexico with Daryl. Mystery all over the place. The ending felt rushed. But it was a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great installment in a wonderful series

I love the Mercy Thompson books (and the Alpha and Omega books, the companion series), and this fourteenth book in the series lived up to my high expectations. First, warning, since some readers found this disconcerting: the book is told from the point of view of multiple characters, not just Mercy, and it has "interludes" - short chapters about things that may or may not be directly related to the plot.

Second, also as a warning, this book mostly takes Adam and Mercy out of the pack and their usual scene, so you won't see much interactions between them and the usual characters.

Third, this book is a lot of fun. It has a plot full of twists and unexpected turns, it lays out a mystery with a surprising end, it has good character development, humor, adventures. I am trying hard not to give spoilers, but it has magic, threatened end of the world, creatures from various mythologies, and complex good and bad guys (guys used in the generic sense).

I just finished it, and plan to read it again, then listen to the audio.
