About this item
Two childhood friends. Two broken hearts. One impromptu road trip to get away from everything. That’s all this was supposed to be. After all, I’ve been living in the friend zone for years now.
But hockey heartthrob Jasper Gervais isn’t looking at me like a friend anymore. And he isn’t touching me like one either.
To his fans, he’s the handsome, talented athlete on TV. To me, he’s still the lost boy with sad eyes and a heart of gold.
The man I’ve loved in secret for years.
So when my life falls apart on my wedding day, it only makes sense that he’s the one to swoop in and save me. And when his world comes crashing down around him, I’m there to return the favor.
But the more time we spend alone, the more Jasper doesn’t feel like a friend at all. He feels like everything I’ve ever wanted and thought I could never have.
Our feelings aren’t straightforward though. They twist and turn around the pain of his past and the reality of my present.
Jasper Gervais acts like he wants me.
But after years of turning me away, he’s going to need to prove it.

Jasper and Sloane
Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2024
The Chestnut Springs Series has me enchanted. Each story is different and each couple is different and I love that.
In Powerless, Jasper and Sloane are the couple and Sloane is cousins to Rhett and Cade from Flawless and Heartless. Jasper was abandoned as child and Harvey adopted him. Which is how he met Sloane. They had instant chemistry and were friends for years. Both liked the other but didn't say.
Then Sloane becomes engaged to a royal douche and Jasper saves her from him and they spend alot of time together alone and the magic happens.
This book has humor, passion, sadness and spicy time. It's a friends to lovers small town romance.

➡ Hockey heartthrob Jasper Gervais may have an Olympic gold under his belt, but it's his heart of gold that Sloane Winthrop has always admired. She's spent years longing for her cousins' adopted brother, only to be friend-zoned repeatedly. But he's still the one she turns to on her wedding day when everything goes to hell and he's the one there for her as she puts herself back together. When his world crumbles and they escape together, will the walls that have been keeping them apart finally come down?

???? What I loved: I'm married to a hockey goalie and love hockey romances but this was my first actual goalie romance! I feel like goal tenders get left out of romances a lot (probably because they're admittedly weird) but it was so fun to read a romance that featured a goalie. Both Jasper and Sloane came into their relationship with their own heart wrenching histories, so it was easy to empathize with them. I also felt like there were some great tropes that mixed together well: childhood friends to lovers, road trip romance, forbidden love and tons of snippets from previous Elsie Silver couples (not just from Chestnut Springs).
????♀️ What I didn't: A lot of the issues that I had with this book were actually called out by the author or characters- I just struggled to get over them. The fact that Jasper and Sloane grew up essentially as cousins even though they didn't share any actual relations made me cringe and despite it being a joke within the book, I just couldn't go there. And, of all the Chestnut Springs relationships I've read to date, this one felt the most unhealthy. Neither Sloane or Jasper was in a solid mental place throughout most of the story and I think some of this played out in their sex scenes and communication or lack there of. Overall, I liked this book but it was probably my least favorite of the Chestnut Springs series so far.

It's a slow burn, but once that switch flips....watch out!

I'm late to the Elsie Silver train, but I'm so glad I'm here now.
I started the Chestnut Springs series this year and I'm hooked. After having Jasper in the background of the previous books, it was nice to see where he came from and how he'd gotten there. That boy was broken by his family, but fortunately he had another family take him in and make them theirs. Thank goodness for the Eatons
Powerless is Sloan and Jasper's story and they are kind of sort of not really cousins. From the moment they met each other when they were just kids, they had something between them. Well, at least Sloan did. She saw Jasper and he was it for her. But time and age and life got in the middle of everything and they went their separate ways. Jasper making a name for himself in the NHL and Sloan becoming a ballerina. But Jasper was always there for Sloan, even when Sloan didn't recognize it. When it comes time for Sloan to make a commitment she doesn't want to, Jasper (and the rest of the Eatons) are there just waiting in the wing.
I don't know how much I enjoyed the slow burn of this story because honestly, after Jasper breaks Sloan free, I just wanted them to give in to all their past feelings. Or give me the angst and sexual tension. I felt like it was just simmer below the surface as opposed to burning hot, which I would've preferred. BUT when you have a broken tortured soul like Jasper's, it takes something more. And Sloan gave it. She knew what she wanted, but had to figure out how to get it. This was the story of friends to lovers, roadtrip, forced proximity, one bed with a side of unrequited love. While it was slow to start, once these two got on the road and had nothing but one on one time to open up to each other, it built a little slow. Then when they arrived at their destination some sort of switch happened for Jasper and BAM!! We went from 0 to 100 like that. They gave in and they realized that they had always been more and they 100% deserved each other.
I enjoyed Powerless and seeing Jasper grow into the man he was meant to be and to finally accept that he needs to be seen. Not only Jasper, but Sloan as well. For her to step up to her dad and ex was a queen move. When you give yourself the power back, good things can happen. While it did take a bit to get there, it was nice to see these two improve as individuals, but also need one another.
Overall, I'm really enjoying this small town romance series. I love the texts that come at the beginning of the chapters and almost always make me laugh at loud. The whole cast of characters are fun and sexy and make the story that much more enjoyable. Powerless gave me a feeling of growth for the characters and I loved seeing them figure themselves out as individuals and as a couple. With the little taste we got at the end of Powerless, I'm really looking forward to the next book. It's going to bring that tension that I love.

Powerless was amazing too. Idk why or what kept me from sleeping on this series for so long. The stories have depth. They make me nostalgic and remind me of sneaking romances in middle and high school and hiding somewhere and reading them.
Jasper and Sloane’s story was just as moving and emotional. Jasper was something else!
Cade is still my favorite out of the three I’ve read though.
