I purchased this sander to replace an old (pre-dust collecting) Makita that could no longer maintain its grip on sandpaper. The random orbital is a different animal than the straight orbital; I think it works much better. Stock removal rate on the Bosch is considerably faster - I used it a few days ago to smooth hardened epoxy/filler while fairing the keel of our boat, and though I had been skeptical about the usefulness of the variable speed feature, I actually used a slower setting to maintain control of stock removal. Even with 60 grit, the resulting surface is remarkably smooth (on wood or epoxy) with no visible marks. Although it has been used on a couple projects, the sanding disk still looks like new. The dust collection is amazing; very little dust gets away from this thing. The down side of that is that the dust collector needs to be cleaned out fairly often. I found the dust collector lid difficult to pry off, but it may loosen up somewhat with use. One little trick to cleaning out the dust collector is to use the shop vac to suck the dust back out of the inlet passage on the dust collector, after lightly tapping the collector on the bench to knock the dust out of the filter element. If you do that, you can clean the dust out in seconds, without removing the lid. Somewhere in the instructions, it says not to force the tool or apply excessive pressure. Believe that. Leaning on the tool seems to slow down the action and make the tool wander all over the place, so just apply light pressure and you can gently guide the tool to where it needs to be. Vibration is minimal; this tool is a pleasure to use.

I have most types of hand power sanders but did not have a random orbit sander. I needed to remove the paint from a wide trim board and was looking for something that was less work than scraping, did not use chemicals, was faster than an inline sander, and not as prone to the spontaneous loss of control of a belt sander.

This tool was perfect. I researched a number of brands, ranging from $29 to over $100, and the Bosch reviews and feature set seemed to be not only what I needed but best in class. It is quieter than my other sanders, and does a moderate job of collecting dust in the attached box. After using it that way for a while I hooked up my shop vac to the dust port and it collected nearly all of the dust - should have done it that way from the start. The only criticism I have is that it took some fiddling with adapters and the included adapter to hook the vac up to the dust port.

The sander is very smooth in operation and feels powerful. It felt like just the right weight to be easily operable but solid. I am glad I got the variable speed model, as tuning the speed adds one more way of controlling the job outcome (besides the amount of time sanding and sand paper grit and type).

I recommend the Bosch and would get it again. Next up is to see how well it sands oak stairs - I would like to avoid renting and using an edge sander if possible. Not so much for the price ($29 for 4 hours locally or $49 for the day) but because it is a bigger, heavier and less controllable tool.

UPDATE:
While I still really like this sander, the dust canister no longer stays on the sander. I do not know if somehow the rubber o-ring is worn down or the plastic lip in the canister. I will try to find a similar o-ring from a local hardware store to see if this fixes it or not but as it stands right now, I have no dust collection on my sander. Lowered a star as a result.

I was apprehensive purchasing this sander because of some of the other reviews. I had the previous Bosch sander, the 1295DVS, and it died after a few years (but with few hours of use.) Looking at the other ROS in this price range, I decided to go with this one and so far, I'm glad I did! Most of the bad reviews are people complaining about the pad not gripping the sand paper. Hooks are definitely smaller than the 1295DVS but I'm having NO ISSUES keeping the paper in place. Only thing I can think of that would cause others problems is the use of cheap sandpaper. I use Gator paper which not only sticks to the ROS good but it also lasts a real long time (from Lowes.) I've also used Freud paper which held well.

Dust system is as advertised - much better than any bag attachment. The canister is not hard to take on/off; it is a snug fit but that's what you expect on something that collects the amount of dust it does. Make sure to empty frequently.

Low vibrations means that you can sand for much longer before you get that tingling in your hands. Positioning of the air vents and the length of the handle means you got good and comfortable spots to sand with both hands without covering the air vents.

While it would be nice to have the variable speed switch in a different location, it's not often you change your speed while sanding so it's location is sufficient.

Worth the extra few dollars to get the hard case. It stores well and allows you to store the ROS on its side in the case meaning you won't warp your pad or flatten your hooks while storing it on its pad, extending the life of your equipment.

If you're in the market for a new ROS then don't hesitate in buying this one, you won't regret it!

An incredible value sander

I don’t have lots of extra money to buy new tools, but I needed to upgrade from my cheap square sander. The dust collection system works surprisingly well, and I usually don’t have to wear a mask because it catches 90% of the dust. The grip is comfortable to use and there is very little vibration to the user. I’ve seen a big increase in the quality and speed in which I can complete projects. I wish I had found this years ago.
