About this item

Paedyn and Kai battle with duty and desire in this highly anticipated second installment in the sizzling and epic romantic fantasy trilogy that’s packed with spicy tension and edge-of-your-seat betrayal.

The kingdom of Ilya is in turmoil…

After surviving the Purging Trials, Ordinary-born Paedyn Gray has killed the King and kickstarted a Resistance throughout the land. Now she’s running from the one person she had wanted to run to.

Kai Azer is now Ilya’s Enforcer, loyal to his brother Kitt, the new King. He has vowed to find Paedyn and bring her to justice.

Across the deadly Scorches, and deep into the hostile city of Dor, Kai pursues the one person he wishes he didn’t have to. But in a city without Elites, the balance between the hunter and hunted shifts—and the battle between duty and desire is deadly.

Well I finished it in about 6 hours and I wish I was someone who could control myself but seeing as I lack that ability I devoured this book. The ending sent has me staring off into space wondering how I’m supposed to wait for the next book. So now I’m picking my heart up off the floor where it’s been put back together just to get trampled on again. Amazing book 2. Robert’s has done it again.

Waited months for this book so it could have this weird forced love triangle, there’s absolutely no need to have that there, the cliffhanger is absolutely ridiculous.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and lackluster

I feel so disappointed after finishing the highly anticipated follow-up to Powerless. I have a number of issues with this book, primarily, the lack of any real plot or development.

Where do I start? Okay, this entire story could've been condensed to a few chapters. It is prolonged angst and banter with no payoff. No substance. Nothing happens. How many times can Paedyn evade capture and successfully escape Kai? Over and over. Witty banter, escape attempts, and the characters not killing each other for 300+ pages.

Finally, after two books of angst, we get a few kisses and our characters express their love. Then we reach an infuriating and cheap cliffhanger. Kai brings the woman he loves to his king. She confesses to her crimes, including MURDER, and the solution? Kitt will marry her.

Not only does the book end on a cliffhanger, but it makes zero sense. There is no logic or reason. I'm so mad I waited months for a book to disappoint me so much.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too short, not enough going on

Why did we wait so long for a three hundred some page book that should’ve just been the ending to the first. So much useless content was shoved in this book, like a school essay with minimum word count. Also ended on a cliffhanger. Not sure I’m even interested in the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings

I have mixed feelings about this one. While I genuinely enjoyed the book, especially the dynamic between Pae and Kai, and appreciated their constant presence together and the ongoing conflict between them, I expected more from the second installment. The storyline felt repetitive, often building up to what seemed like a climactic moment that never fully materialized.

Despite this, Lauren's writing style is captivating, and she remains an incredible storyteller. I wouldn't call this book a bad read by any means, and I'm looking forward to the third book and seeing where Pae and Kai's journey takes them next.

I just love their love story and their banter. My only regret is reading this before the entire trilogy is released lol I AM NOT PATIENT! I am also surprised by the cliffhanger but I can think of SOME ways that it makes sense, I have many theories lol… but I won’t spoil anything ;) I just think we’ll have to wait and see! And that’s the worst part.
