About this item

Accepting my career in the Army is over after losing my leg is hard. But the obnoxious, good looking, glass-half-full surfer in my physical therapy sessions is worse.

And god help him if he doesn’t stop trying to give me advice.

Living in a home with three of my closest veteran buddies is a challenge as we all have our crosses to bear and wounds to heal from, but mine only seem to be getting deeper with every step forward I take. I already have to adjust to a new life as a civilian. I don’t need a sexuality crisis to go with it.

But Heath is making me question everything I thought I knew about myself. And while that should terrify me, somehow, he’s helping me feel braver than I ever have before.

Creek is the first book of the Honorably Discharged series, featuring a grumpy veteran with a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas, a sunshine surfer who can bring out the best in almost everyone, a bisexual awakening, found family, hurt/comfort, and a steamy happily ever after.

This book was impossible to put down. It was to the point that I let my kindle die trying to finish it and let it charge the minimum amount so I could finish reading. I loved these characters and they all felt so real. Heath and Creek both have amazing support systems, and I can't wait to see more of these guys in future books for the series.

I also really liked the disability rep in this book. While their injuries are similar, the situations between Heath and Creek are vastly different. It was interesting to see how they were effected and how they coped.

This was a great story with amazing characters. It had a great enemies to lovers vibe, with fun nicknames, found family, plenty of snark and some great spicy scenes. The most disappointing this is that I have to wait until December for Bean's book!

I love these characters so much I wanted to give this read a 5 but I needed more time on paper with the characters to truly feel the emotional evolution of their relationship.

Don’t get me wrong, the progression felt organic and real. The writing was well done and full of heart. I just needed more moments of the 2 MC’s bonding, getting to know each other and really learning about each other. As it was, I felt a little like a stone skipping over the water. I was getting the overall picture with snippets of the relationship evolving but i didn’t feel immersed in the relationship like I wanted to feel.

I appreciated that Creek’s bi-awakening wasn’t the center of the story and with many Queer people in his life it didn’t upset him much as he adjusted to his new reality.

Heat level….maybe a 2.5? The love scenes occurred organically and were reasonably steamy but nothing that was super kinky or crazy hot. These love scenes were more about 2 people coming together to express how they felt about each other as opposed to being erotic literature; and that’s ok. I don’t need 5/5 heat level to have a good story (I wouldn’t say no! But I don’t HAVE to have that).

I enjoyed the vulnerability each character felt and had to go through as they navigated their new different life with a missing limb. It was really sweet to watch them slowly learn to trust each other with their vulnerabilities without the toxic masculinity that can creep in to some books.

Overall I REALLY enjoyed this story! I also fell in love with the chosen family and cannot wait for their books to come out.

    Good job!

5.0 out of 5 stars This story is the perfect book for someone struggling that needs inspiration!

Heath inspiring high school students (if raised a kid, or volunteered around teens - that's a challenge itself, lol). To see someone lose it all and become a role model is simply amazing! Creek is reflective of the military owning the men & women that serve. That life is all consuming dedication, loyalty and family. Transition over to civilian life not possibly for many. Both have the journey that is inspiring and met in the process priceless. The story inspiring for some one struggling - work on mind, body and soul before you can soar. Through in friends that become family and humor and you have a winner. MM romance.

This was the first book I’ve read by these authors. I was hesitant initially because I wasn’t sure how much I’d appreciate the military aspects of this story. I must admit I found it thoroughly engrossing and enjoyable. The character development of Heath and Creek as well as all those around them created an excellent backdrop for the story. In the end, I sad to this chapter complete. I’m hoping and anticipating that we’ll hear more about Heath and Creek in book 2!

A good read with characters of depth, solid disability rep, and no angst for the sake of angst (any angst is definitely earned).
Grumpy Creek and smiley surfer Heath differ in their approaches to recovery and living life after leg amputation. They rub each other the wrong way right off the bat and I was happy that this turned out to be a bit of a slow burn. Their interactions were both lighthearted jabs/banter and emotionally honest conversations about their shared trauma. They have a great connection and their path to love felt very genuine.
Creek’s found family of Army vets are all sweet and supportive while still figuring themselves out. I can’t wait to read about all of them, especially Nash.
Looking forward to the rest in this series!

I enjoyed Creek and Heath’s story. At first I thought this would be a typical grumpy-sunshine romance, but it’s much more nuanced. Both MCs have been through similar traumatic experiences and I appreciate that the authors didn’t pull any punches describing their differing journeys. I’m looking forward to Bean’s story next in the series
