I was able to attend an event that the author, Mason Funk, did in West Hollywood where he read excerpts from four of the individuals in the book.

Each person’s story highlighted their experience on a personal level as well as how they contributed to moving the greater cause of equality forward.

As Mason talked about, they were all willing to contribute even when the immediate impact and ultimate outcome of their efforts wasn't clear.

But they did it anyway because they knew what was right.

This is such an inspiring book that gives you new insight into the personal efforts and sacrifices that people made all of the country in the spirit of LGBTQ rights.

Both an important historical record and a guidebook of lessons and experiences that are relevant today.

I bought this book as a gift for my son and haven't read it, but I did look through it a little and was very impressed with the information. It's also a book that feels really good to hold, sturdy and vibrant, like a collectors edition. We are very pleased with the quality and content of this book.

I really enjoyed this collection. While it recognized the major names of the quest for LGBTQ+ recognition and equality, it also brought light to the stories and people we don’t know. The scope of people that Outwords - inspired by the Shoah Project - reached is amazing and while I almost wish he’d highlighted fewer and left the interviews longer, there are no stories I’d have cut so I understand his dilemma. Was especially grateful foe those who died shortly after their interviews as these stories are so crucial. Like Mark Segal said about Stonewall, tell your own story not someone else’s.

"The Book of Pride" is beautifully crafted with interviews of LGBTQ elders from around the United States. The chapters separate the different interviews by categories: Community, Integrity, Liberation, Breaking Ground, Disrupters, Spirit, Survival, Bridges, Words, and Truth to Power. As someone who identifies well versed in LGBTQ history, I humbly read each interview and gained a new perspective. I wrote down many different events, organizations, and historical landmarks that I had no idea were in one shape or form created by an LGBTQ elder. There are still so many untold stories in marginalized communities and I think "The Book of Pride" is a fantastic testament that needs to be read/shared by the community, especially youth. Thankful for the pioneers featured in this book and in the archive.

I got so much out of this book. It’s such an amazing history, so inspiring to read the stories of the people who have fought for LGBT rights and who came out in the days when it meant risking everything. It really made me emotional. I wish they taught this stuff in schools. Everyone should know the names of these gay and lesbian and trans and bi heroes. I watched some of the interviews on the website too. Amazing.

As a white, heterosexual woman I wasn’t familiar with many of these people. This was a great way for me to learn about their lives and their contributions to America’s civil rights struggles.

Good read, especially for Pride. Very diverse characters. There were some gaps I wished the author covered like protests in LA and SF that led to the Gay Rights Movement, but overall a good read.
