5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to play great sound

This is a great fretless bass and I plugged it in for the first time and tuned it the sound was unbelievable the sound bending is also unbelievable and being able to produce different tones with a Fretless bass has made the difference in my approach to bass playing, though I have been practicing with it I still have not neglected my six string and five string and four strings basses, this guitar fits in well with the spectrum of my tools

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT fretless!

As other reviewers have said, this bass has wonderful tone and endless possibilities for pickup/EQ combinations thanks to the piezo system. I bought this as a complement to my other fretless (Music Man Stingray with ebony fingerboard, strung with roundwounds) to give me a more mellow, flatwound tone, and it is exactly what I was hoping for. Beautiful tone, mwah for days, comfortable neck/fingerboard, light weight, endless tonal possibilities... I couldn't be happier.

Lovely shape and feel. Sound -- who knows? The instrument buzzes so badly that it's hard to gauge its qualities. Returned immediately.

I only usually write reviews for items purchased at Amazon but am making an exception here because this is a wonderful bass.

First, watch the QC. My first one had a problem with one string's piezo buzzing or cutting out, and I returned it. The replacement plays beautifully and is a keeper. I commonly read of electronics problems, e.g. a solder joint and that they're usually easily fixed.

Once "debugged" though, it plays and sounds like a dream. The tonal flexibility, relative light weight and looks are its strengths. Stock Bartolini pickups are very good. I tried several different sets of strings on it and ultimately came back to the stock D'Addario Chromes flats. Rounds might chew the fretboard after a while, and I prefer the smooth feel and sound of flats on this bass anyway. It's plenty bright and has lots of tonal character with flats.

I also own the SRF700 four string model and play it now and then. It's very light and also good. I've just come to prefer the added range of a five string. This one played up the neck, towards the lower (thicker) strings and using just the piezos can provide a good double bass-like tone. I add an "acoustic" patch on my Boss B6 to really dial in that sound when I want it.

Run just the neck pickup, stay on the lower part of the neck and it sounds like a fretted P-bass if you have good intonation. Speaking of which, the side neck dots and line "ticks" are surprisingly helpful and easy to use. I also have an older Ibanez lined fretless and now prefer this unlined (on the side only) setup. You do have to consider parallax especially on the five string, yet should be more closely listening to your pitch on a fretless anyway. (If you play primarily by looking where to fret, get a lined fretless.) With flats and because the neck pickup is immediately below the end of the neck I don't slap it much, but it'll do in a pinch.

Set up nice and low it'll growl and mwah with the best of them and the neck is fast and silky. It just oozes character, and on stage I consistently get compliments on its unique appearance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!

This is my first fretless and I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of playing right out of the box. I really like the Piezo tone by itself (no magnetics). However, the tonal variations are almost endless when in combination of the magnetics and Piezo. The bass is also lighter than I had anticipated and the neck is thinner than my other 5-string. The neck seems very stable as I don't have to tune it much at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome bass!!!

I was able to purchase this bass from a local music store. The bass was lighter than I thought it might be - but without sacrificing great tone and great sustain! I received it on September 18 and played it first time live on September 20 in a church worship service. Huge sound, great playability. Great variations in the tone the EQ controls: each pickup has its own volume control (better way to blend pickups, IMHO) and tone control with center detent. Piezo bridge pickups work/sound better than the ones on my $5000 boutique bass - very easy to dial in a near-upright tone from it. I am thoroughly impressed with this bass - this is the fourth fretless I have owned (including a USA and an MIM Fender Jazz) and is probably the last that I will need to purchase. The only drawback to the bass is that I am going to have to learn how to intonate the pitches above the 19th "fret" as this bass does have the extended range to the 31st "fret" - to a high C#/Db. Of course, the fact that I got it for about 20% less makes it all the better!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars IF YOU WANT A FRETLESS DON'T HESITATE!

I would rate this a 10 if they had it. I bought an inexpensive Rogue fretless to see if I really liked fretless and obviously did. Looked at Fender, Godin to name a few and settled on this bass. I really shouldn't say settled because I love every thing about this bass. The neck is great; smooth, fast and has great action with zero buzz. It comes with very good flatwound strings and find no reason to change them. The EQ is excellent and with the 3 pick ups available a great variety of tone can be achieved. There is a bridge Piezo pickup with small adjustment screws on the back designed for different gauges of strings but at this time I have not tried them as I am still figuring out where I want my EQ set. This bass is not only fun to play. it looks great too. I have heard some complain that the back is cluttered. So what, not an issue. Battery access without screwdriver is great touch. 30 frets gives 2 1/2 octave upper register. Would not hesitate to recommend!
