5.0 out of 5 stars Great guitar
Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2024
It is a great kit with ebony fretboard and resonant mahogany body. I put a brass mass block on from the get go, and sanded the frets, but stripped the bolts from putting on and taking off the neck. Had to shim the back of the neck pocket. HH are 12N and 11.3 B, and sound very good. The tuners are OK at 16:1 gear ratio. Oil on the FB makes the ebony stand out with the sharktooth inlays done well. Nut fine. 24 jumbo frets. I put on strap locks instead of the fender cheapo ones. It is now a fine guitar with great sustain and tone in all three positions of the switch. The directions were not that good and it required some knowledge and tools. Harder bolts would be nice. Be careful.

***UPDATE - ADDED ANOTHER STAR for excellent customer service team who reached out for feedback.
    So now a 4* review.

    The Flame body:
The good: low cost, even with shipping, everything is pre-drilled, pickups aren't all that bad and the quick connect is nice. Neck fit nice and snug in the pocket and the frets didn't need too much work. Body would have been a good candidate for staining.

The not so good: neck pocket was too shallow and saddles couldn't be adjust high enough to set action. I had to reroute the neck cavity over ⅛ of an inch. The bridge is really unimpressive and could be heavier duty and a little longer for saddle travel. The tuners are are very low quality and even after stretching the strings, the tuning stability isn't that good.

I would buy this kit again and do some modifications like adding a Floyd Rose tremolo, locking nut and upgraded pickups.

For the price, it would be worth the needed work and you still have play money for upgrades or whatever else you want.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to build, great for testing how well an idea can work
Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2024
I wanted to see if I could build an electric guitar that's been burned with 10,000 volts... Turned out really great I think! So easy to assemble that I honestly spent more time agonizing over how to coat it. (Went with spray on lacquer from Lowes. About 3 cans of it. Then steel wool #0 to smooth out the spray once dried.)

Do not buy this guitar if you expect to play it immediately upon assembly.

Do buy this guitar if you want to learn how to think critically about guitars… It was a great learning experience that has lead me to learn all sorts of new things about how guitars work.

The neck fits the body very well. The neck is straight and the fret ends are well sanded with no sharp edges.

The electronics are low grade but they sound better than my Epiphone.

The hardware is also cheap. Light weight bridge, plastic nut, cheap tuners.

The video is not super helpful. I had to watch several other videos about kit guitars to get it all put together.

The neck pocket isn’t quite deep enough and so the bridge saddles have to be set way higher than they should be.

The nut needed to be sanded in order to lower the strings.

After doing all of the paint and assembly I had to adjust the neck and the intonation. I expected this.

Even with the neck adjustment there is fret buzz. I don’t have the tools to fix that so I have to take it to someone to have the fret work done… or buy the tools.

1.0 out of 5 stars The guitar body is NOT mahogany. It's PRESS BOARD. 0/10 Would not recommend.
Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2024
I bought this kit to try a something different. I was skeptical of the mahogany claim, and for good reason; it's press board, NOT mahogany! Ktaxon clearly knows nothing about hardwoods.

If you care about truthful advertising, or real wood guitars, keep looking, and elsewhere. I just assumed it was basswood from the weight. I had no idea they were lying in the description. Had I known it was just press board, I never would have bought it.

I initially filled the cutout on the bottom with epoxy, and also used it to finish the whole project, which is a good thing, since it's not solid wood. I hated the upper horn because it extended too far in my opinion, but an easy fix. I'd initially planned to gift it away, and didn't trim it back at first.

The person I was to gift it to decide to switch to drums, so I decided to keep it.

That's why the pics show the cut on a finished guitar. As soon as the saw blade started to cut, I smelled Elmer's glue and sawdust. Ah... Press board. A far cry from mahogany, but it was obvious by the 15 ounce weight out of the box that it wasn't.

The real pathetic part is the bs excuse you get from the seller when called out. They contacted me because of the initial 2.5 stars I mentioned. Let's be honest: this kit doesn't deserve any stars. Nor do the sellers.

*About the actual kit and build process*

It's extremely easy to put together minus the terribly cut wire routes. The way they have the 24 frets against a body not made for it puts the pickups closer together, but whatever it was $59.99 plus $19.99 to ship. If you don't expect much, you definitely get it.

I initially used the hardware and electronics it came with, but once I found out I was keeping it, I swapped it all out as the wiring etc, though effective is complete garbage. The bridge weighed about 3 ounces, the pots were horrible, the wiring looked similar to a dollar store rc car, and the switch was stiff. All in all the trash can had no complaints!

The square connectors barely fit the round holes to push through, but not impossible. The pickups did work, but for the love of decent tone, I swapped them out for P90s to fit the ice theme.

The neck is a little surprising. I had to file the fret edges, but it's really not bad, considering.

Overall I'd give it a .00005 star rating, and I have already suggested the seller clarifies that it is not in fact mahogany, but very lightweight press board. Sadly, they don't care. They called the press board "mahogany colored" wood. And were completely dismissive.

Buy as many as you like, just know it's not mahogany, or even decent quality.

I've been building and working on guitars for over 20 years, and am amazed this kit has a 3.9 star rating as of 4-11-24. If you want it to be playable, you'll have to upgrade all hardware and electronics, and address the ridiculous fret edges.

I currently have 8 coats of epoxy on it, but after discovering the "wood" type, plan that many more at least. If nothing else, it's a cool wall decoration.
