5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent historical mystery

A little to PC for me, but Murder by Lamplight has an exciting plot set in one of my favorite time periods and is well written. I enjoyed the gritty details and the depth of historical research. All of the characters were well written, it’s hard writing a female character in that time period with independence and the ability to affect the story while still accommodating the laws of the era so while I found the main female character a bit Mary Sue it was still a great story and I look forward to reading anything else that Patrice McDonough writes.

Really good story with excellent characters. Writing is good but would be improved by better cohesion. Definitely worth reading. Would like to see a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good historical mystery, but not a cozy mystery.

Cozy mysteries are usually less violent and lacking sex, often set in villages where the townsfolk are part of the characters in the plot. This book is a page-turner and, like the cozy mystery, there is an amateur sleuth, Dr. Julia Lewis. There is the hint of a blossoming relationship between Julia and D. I. Tennant, but, for the most part, the relationship is based upon the thread of murders on which they’re focused. Because Julia is a woman in a profession owned by men, her services are not sought by those in the upper class. This book deals with those of all classes of citizens, but especially the lower class who were victimized by others. Among the problems discussed are deaths by cholera and those who used others for sex, including sodomy. The story is compelling and I found the book well-written. I recommend the book—just understand that a cozy historical mystery, it isn’t, IMHO. A good historical crime novel portraying the dark side of mankind, it is.

This is a fabulous mystery with intriguing characters and a surprising finale. Often, in period mysteries, the author attributes knowledge and abilities that are anachronistic. Not so here. Beautifully researched and presented. I 100% recommend.

I thoroughly enjoyed Murder by Lamplight which kept me reading long into the night! The writing flows effortlessly, the characters leap off the page and the period details transport you to a time when female doctors were a rarity and not respected. I can't wait to read more of Dr. Julia Lewis's story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique Mystery With Lots of Twists

This maybe Ms McDonough is first historical mystery, but I sincerely hope it will not be her last. The story of Julia and Tenant was rich with historical background and plenty of plot twists. It had me on the edge of my seat as the female doctor -- A rarity in that age -- and an injured war veteran turned policeman race to stop a vicious murderer. I stayed up way too late to finish this story. But I would do it again. Hope to read more by her soon.
