Right out of the gate I'll tell you that probably most of the reports about screen lagging haven't taken off the screen protector. Once you pull that off it works just fine. It's not meant to stay on it. It's just for installing it.

Now that's out of the way.

So what happened here was that the USB port on my 2020 pioneer receiver failed. This radio has already been in the shop one time and I had to spend $300 to have it fixed. Normally I would say that's crazy but this was during Covid and there were no replacement radios. Since the only way to interface with this radio with CarPlay is through the USB port I was pretty much screwed. This radio has HD radio and the cheapest one to replace it with was about $450. While I will say that I like Apple CarPlay, it does have some drawbacks that are really annoying. The first one being that the CarPlay system basically turns your radio into an extension monitor of the phone. That's great and all, but the biggest problem with that is that the actual "native" features of the radio aren't available on the screen while CarPlay is running. That means to get back to the radio or any of the other inputs you have to tap the home button and scroll through a bunch of damn screens. I found this while driving to be extremely distracting and irritating. So basically what I mean is that if you were trying to go from CarPlay to the radio tuner, satellite radio, or even settings you have to go away from either the CarPlay screen (which is usually your navigation). Then you have to do a bunch of extra button presses to get back to where you were. That's a real drawback. Apparently radio manufacturers haven't figured out how to split the screen so that there are still radio controls on the screen while CarPlay is running. I'm sure this is prohibited from a cost perspective.

So instead of replacing the radio I just bought this ad on unit. What I didn't anticipate as how awesome this would be. Not so much that the unit itself is awesome, but the functionality. At first I was pretty annoyed because the audio coming out of the aux out On this device isn't great. In fact I would call it subpar. It states that you can connect to your radio via Bluetooth but I haven't figured out a way how to do that. This device never shows up on the radio to connect to. Plus I can't see how it could be receiving a Bluetooth signal and transmitting it at the same time. Either way, here's what I figured out in the case of this particular radio. Yours may be the same, yours may not. The aux out audio on this device isn't great. In fact I would call it subpar. It's not that it's noisy or anything, it just lacks dynamic range. Well that's disappointing. It occurred to me that for music I could still Bluetooth to the existing pioneer radio in the car. Well, when I do that I'm still connected to the new CarPlay unit. I can control the track information and do anything CarPlay related from tyat screen!! That's really cool because now I can look at my Maps or whatever apps CarPlay supports and I can access the rest of the Pioneer without CarPlay taking that screen and doing all the button pushing to switch between the radio's native apps/settings and CarPlay. . Like I can do satellite radio and not have to leave the nav screen. I have full control of the Pioneer radio as if I wasn't running CarPlay at all (it isn't). I can answer/quit phone calls from either device. I'm guessing whichever one I answer it with is the one that the mic is. That I haven't figured out. But the quality of it seems pretty good either way. This is an upgrade in a way I had t expected.

Only caveats? Well, an extra screen. You can consider that a plus or a minus. Just depends. The other is that I have this unit set to the internal speakers which is nice because it will default to that if I'm not using Bluetooth and still be able to hear directions. This isn't really optimal but it does work. The other is that I have this unit set to the internal speakers which is nice because it will default to that if I'm not using Bluetooth and still be able to hear directions. This isn't really optimal but it does work. Also, sometimes the audio will default for Bluetooth to this thing which forces audio to the new devices's speakers instead of the radio . That's not really a problem because if I just go to the Bluetooth input on the original radio, all I have to do is tap pause and then play again and it's back with the audio connected to Bluetooth on the pioneer radio.

The unit itself has some pretty nice features. One that you can set the screen time out so it's not glaring in your face when you don't need it. It has a timer on it so it will go out after 10 seconds or 30 seconds. All you have to do is touch it for it to come back on. That will probably extend the life of this device significantly. It also has the ability to dim the screen at a certain time of day. I like that as well. All in all it's pretty well laid out and simple to use. For the money I recommend it. If you're going full aux in? I'd look at a better unit. In fact I bought one for my other car and the audio circuit is really decent on it. I'd link it, but it's no longer in stock. It was the cheapest one on Amazon too. $37. The audio on this one isn't good so I'd avoid it if you plan to aux in.
