5.0 out of 5 stars Simple install and works with my indoor chimes

I had an old style push button door bell when I moved into my circa 1999 home six years ago. I quickly replaced it with a SkyBell which worked fine until about a year ago. It stopped consistently advising me of visitors and the microphone / speaker never really worked correctly. So I wanted to replace it with something a bit more up-to-date. My choice of brands would be something that worked with my existing smart home components and existing apps or something that wasn't going to clobber me with monthly subscription costs.

I am a legacy customer of Blink, meaning that I don't have to pay a monthly fee for cloud storage. And I have several smart plugs and light switches on TP-Link's excellent app so I pretty much decided that I would go with one of these two brands. TP-Link wanted a subscription fee, so when I saw Blink's doorbell camera at a good price, I jumped. It came the same day, so I installed it the next day.

Would it fit the current placement and cover the crude hole carved on my porch for the wires?
Would it be an easy setup and would the voltage in my 22+ year old home be sufficient?
Would it feel secure when mounted? Yes to all these questions.

The existing Sky Bell doorbell cam is pretty small and didn't protrude from the wall very much. The Blink is longer and fatter, so the mount, while secure, is a bit less solid than I would like - it seems to rock a bit when pressed hard. But the wiring was simple. Installation required that I drill one additional hole in my stucco, but it took all of 15 minutes to complete the installation job. Well, 15 minutes doesn't include:
- the time I spent undoing the mounting bracket because I put it on backwards (!) and
- the time I spent unmounting the whole doorcam to remove the sticky transparent plastic wrap that Blink puts on the cam to protect it from damage while shipping and handling. Funny - no where in the instructions did I see anything about this wrap and it's almost invisible - until you mount it.

One pro tip - there is a funny little tool that comes in the bottom of the package that you use to open the doorbell up from the bottom when it is time to replace batteries. A) Don't throw it out as it is perfectly sized to do that job. B) It comes in mighty handy to also force the doorbell on to the mount as well. I had trouble getting the body of the doorbell onto the mount and snapping into place until I used the tool. I put my tool on top of the chime box inside the house where I will completely forget it when I need it.

In operation, The Blink door cam works well in detecting approaching visitors and I love how it works with my existing chimes. One thing that needs work is that the app allows me to exclude areas of the camera view from motion detection. This app feature seems to work with my other Blink cameras but not with my door cam. I block out motion detection right next to my door, but it detects motion there anyway. Minor, but it should work better in this regard.

I'm very glad I purchased this tool for monitoring my front door. It was a great price and was easy to install. Anyone could do this!

I like this system but it seems slow compared to my friends with a different brand. If I want to answer when someone rings the bell it takes about thirty to sixty seconds to work and by then most have walked away. The nightime picture is not clear and sometimes a yellowish cast and other times clear color. No idea why.
The outside camera would not mount to the stand and has no place for me to hook it on a nail. Two sided gorilla type just fell off. Better than nothing but probably a tech person would like it better. Still better than nothing as I can see who comes to my neighbors door, only four feet away, when she is traveling so I can keep an eye on her place and mine any time or from any place.

5.0 out of 5 stars MY BAD! - RE Audio at doorbell very weak and quiet.

Re my initial review below: First of all, Amazon couldn't have been more accommodating. After numerous live tech support calls, I heard from Kevin, a supervisor. After sending him some recordings of the barely audible audio, he sent me a new unit. I noticed as I peeled off the shrink wrap that it covered the speaker. "Hmmm, that didn't come off so easily on the first one. I think I thought it was weather protection designed to stay on and protect the case."
You see where this is going...I removed the film from the first one and, as suspected - perfectly clear audio.
Knucklehead.
I wish I could give this 6 stars for Amazon's graciousness and support.

If I shout into my phone and put my ear next to the doorbell I can barely hear it. I can hear audio FROM the doorbell fine on my phone, just not working in the other direction. Network is great, full bars...still works fine as a motion sensor doorbell, just don't try communicating with anyone at the doorbell. I thought this would compare favorably with the Ring doorbell but maybe I should have spent more.

Okay, 1 year using and 1 year to learn so as to give a real review, it's not some 4k ultimate video recording doorbell, but the video is clear enough and dollar for dollar it might be one of the better 1080 doorbells, it does have some issues I found work arounds for and some I couldn't, the reviews you read saying it's very slow to motion alert you are not just hard to please customers, it is an issue, It is slow to alert you thru the app on your phone, why I have not a clue, the work around is if you have Echo Dot or Echo Show and you know how to set up routines, have Alexa tell you when that device detects motion, I found it lightning quick, why that works faster I don't know, lol, remember I'm doing honest review on how things worked for me. I also discovered you can have Echo Show or Echo Dot be your chime so again if you understand Alexa routines, and you have alexa devices, you will never have an issue hearing when someone rings your blink Doorbell, don't forget to link your Blink app and the Alexa app to ensure the above things work for you, okay on to issue I can't find a work around, Blinks idea of battery life reminds me of auto manufacturers MPG estimates, we all know in the real world it's not going to happen, sure, if you dial down all the features, you might get half of what Blink says, but then I ask you, why have it, we buy them to use them right ?, so I have found average battery life even using the suggested energizer ultimate lithium, is about 6 months, not 2 years and don't care how they or their paid reviewers try to spin it, it's not going to happen even if you dial all the features down, making it a waste of money, and yes I'm using the sync module which is supposed to help battery life, maybe it does, can't answer that but real life, no B.S. spinning, your not going to come close to their battery projections, my only work around for that is the batteries are easy to change and I understand and can deal with this, Speaking of the Blink module, I use it for local storage and I also use the pay for cloud storage, that's another non work around issue, far far to many features are LOCKED OUT, if you don't pay for the Blink subscription, Now if you don't care about saving videos and you just want to know who is at your door regardless if you are home or away, this will alert you, it will display to you video of who and allow you to talk to them also and I must say it does a good job at it and you don't need the blink subscription and if you do have the Blink module and a usb stick in, it will save those for you, at short lengths, but it will do it. Overall it is a good security device, and although obviously it is far from the better ones. From a pure value Perspective I would highly recommend this, , easy to install, no wires, pretty much can put it where you want it, Again it does everything pretty well, One of the best prices out there, just understand it has shortcomings, but also understand it's price, and it will certainly do the job for you, this isn't a trashing review, I tried my hardest to be real and actually recommend it, it just doesn't function at the upper levels of some of the others, but it doesn't have the upper price tag , plus I am actually going to buy another, remember, you can put them about anywhere, I actually have one stashed at the front of my house, not by the door, it gives me a full frontal view of my home when I am away, sure it is a Doorbell but it is a camera as well and at this nice price why not, weather elements have not hurt mine a bit in the 13 months I have had them, including the one not by the door and pretty open to rain, snow and cold, it has held up well, still ticking, no signs of wear, so another plus
