I bought these as ‘renewed’, but to be honest they were clearly new but opened. I’d more than happily pay full price for these now I’ve heard them - what a cracking design, especially the mechanical horn design, which really helps with efficiency (90db/W/m - impressive)
Context: I’m an amplifier designer who previously ran a company making high end tube gear. I like my audio clear and clean but not shrill. I wouldn’t call myself an audiophile, largely because that’s a bit of a subjective statement, but I appreciate and have owned some extremely expensive speakers, decks and DACs over the years, plus I’ve designed some of the definitive reference preamplifiers of the last 30 years.
These are not a pair of Linn cabinet speakers, or even higher end Kefs, but they’re incredibly impressive if installed properly, and I’d put them up against any other ceiling speakers I’ve heard in this size. Get some physical damping behind them, give them amplification with a decent damping factor (they’re a bit flubby with a cheap class-D amp, though still pretty impressive) and they’ll absolutely rock your world, for less than a decent meal!
Bottom line - one of the best bargains in audio. I have no idea how they do this for the price, when just the inductors and caps in the crossover would cost half the purchase price if bought alone.
Downside? They do need a 9.5 inch diameter hole, so plan accordingly. Other than that, nothing.
