About this item

As a remanufactured Original Equipment part, this unit guarantees a perfect vehicle fit
All critical components (cam packs, spool valves, etc.) are triple-tested to ensure product reliability; Units are supplied with 100% tested and calibrated pressure relief valves
All units are built with 100% new O-rings and premium-grade HNBR seals to prevent leaks; HNBR does not break down at high temperatures like conventional seal material
Shafts are surfaced to precise specifications to eliminate premature seal wear and extend pump life; Final pump assembly is computer-tested to measure pressure, bypass, fluid flow, valve operation, steering effort and noise to ensure reliable performance.
Our remanufacturing process is earth-friendly, as it reduces the energy and raw material needed to make a new part by 80%.

This filter is required when swapping a rack but just might save the original if installed early enough. Compact, well built and serviceable. Great little filter.

5.0 out of 5 stars I should have installed this filter long ago.

A bit of a challenge pushing the old hose all the way to the stop on the fitting. Had to push a drift into the hose to accomplish the mission. But, really no big deal. There is no 5 minute project????.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fits my 2000 Passat just fine
Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2013
I just replaced my steering rack and it took two days of labor and was quite a messy and difficult project as well. The rack rebuilder (Cardone) urges the installation of this filter. The PS reservoir in my Passat has a built-in filter screen which is perhaps all that I really need for filtration. However, it does not have a magnet so I do see the value in this added filter.

This filter is machined from a block of aluminum. Inside is a wire mesh basket which rides on a spring. Atop this is a magnet shaped like a flat donut. Apparently the spring allows the basket to move if the filter becomes clogged so that it does not block the stream of fluid. So it's a bypass valve. I purchased the 3/8-inch size.

I installed the filter in the return line that goes to the reservoir. Don't put it on the high pressure side! Both the incoming and outgoing hoses on the reservoir are low pressure so it's your pick. Just be sure to orient the filter to the flow direction correctly or the bypass will not work.

The filter is relatively easy to open. Just pry out the circlip and pull the halves apart. The manufacturer suggests looking at the filter screen every 30000 miles. This is not a problem for me as that is a good interval to flush my ps fluid anyway.

There is a dim and tiny label stuck on the filter to show the direction fluid should take through it. It is so poorly done and hard to read. When it got a bit of PS fluid on it, it was practically unreadable. I'm pretty sure this sad little label will just fall off in few thousand miles. My solution is to just scratch a big arrow on the body of the filter pointing toward the circlip. That's the flow direction. You can see this label in Amazon's picture of the product. It is so peculiar that they chose to make the tiny flow arrow point opposite the reading direction of the "FLOW" legend. You have to do a lot of gyrations in visualizing which way to install this filter whenever you see this label.

The filter is strong and well made and should certainly last the remaining life of my car. The filter is cleanable, so that's a plus. Except for the awful label I do recommend this filter as a reasonable investment to perhaps extending the life of a steering rack.

1.0 out of 5 stars Filter leaked then came apart. I should have heeded the bad reviews!
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2018
Since Cardone says they won't honor the warranty on their replacement power steering pumps unless one installs an inline filter, I ignored all of the negative reviews and went ahead and installed one. And of course the filter started leaking and came apart several weeks later -- just as the previous reviewers tried to warned about. So my wife lost power steering while she was driving and I had to spend some time on a mid-January afternoon trying to remove the filter and replace it with a barbed hose connector. I wasn't able to separate the filter ends from the hose, so gave up on the removal idea (for now). I was finally able to reassemble the filter and am trying to figure out the easiest way to remove or repair the filter to avoid such problems in the future. At this point I'm wishing I had never installed this filter. If I had it to do again, I'd either skip the filter and take a chance on the power steering pump warranty, or install some other brand filter. But I would definitely AVOID THIS CARDONE IN-LINE FILTER!

I didn’t need this but since I was replacing a bad pump and leaky hose I thought it would be a good idea to put it on to filter anything out that may have contaminated the old system.
