5.0 out of 5 stars So far, glad I bought it and very happy!!
Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2016
We were finally bumped up in our Internet data speed at home enough to be able to give the Ooma line a try out, from 1 Mbps to 3 Mbps.
I know it has many, many mixed reviews, but so far, and it's been a few months now, I am very happy with the purchase and switching to Ooma from the old, very expensive landline.
I bought the Ooma certified refurbished "Telo" which saved a chunk of money right there and it has worked great from day one and looked brand new when I got it. The slightly used box was the only giveaway it was a used unit.
My biggest gripe with the Ooma brand is lack of clear or current information, in the box or on the website. Sure it shows the basics but no info on things like turning down the brightness level on the Telo unit, it is a nice blue, and you can change the color, but it's really bright out of the box, I did find out how to dim it online. Or that when you "port the landline number" it was with us anyway, porting automatically closed our landline account, which we found out when we went to close it ourselves. Sure if you hunt around online you can find it, but I think it should be easier to locate on the company site and keep it updated!
As for savings? It IS THERE!! We were spending almost $50.00 a month for just basic phone service and caller ID, now, after paying a little over $120.00 for the entire YEAR, there's a saving of over $400.00, and it now costs only $4.24 a month, just the local state and government fees. LOVE IT.
The call quality has been pretty good so far, yes I've had the echo calls but since we don't use the home phone an awful lot what I love the most is being able to monitor the phone from my computer or smart phone while out and about.
I feel you are going to want to just spend the money and go with the premiere plan. The basic Ooma plan is just too basic and about all of the cool features are with the better plan anyway, it is worth the money. I'll just pay for that once a year though.
Also keep the number you get to start the service as a second number or get another number to be the second number, it can give you a second line on your cell phone through the Ooma app.
And that Do Not Allow Calls blacklist? Perfect because before switching almost all our calls on the home phone had become sales and 'Robo' calls! I had gone online and completed the "Do Not Call Registry" several times over the years but apparently the businesses that call never got the message so this system works fantastic for that feature alone! Now, a call from a known or unknown number that more likely than not is a sales call can be added to that list. Sure our Panasonic phone system allowed up to 10 blacklist numbers but we were getting far more than that and for the landline company to help would cost even more money!
I most recently purchased one the the HD2 handsets for the home Ooma system, a used one that like the Telo looked and worked like brand new. So far even that has turned out a better buy than expected with the overall low ratings. Maybe because we live in a rural area, but the experience has been really good so far.
If down the road problems arise and we don't like the Ooma we'll just drop a home phone all together and just use our cells!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Install - Great Sound - Fantastic Price!

I bought this to cut down on bills and it did! Both my husband and I have cell phones and rarely use the home phone but we need to keep it for certain elderly family to reach us. As soon as we received the package I opened it to get everything set up. Instructions were simple and it was very easy to get running. You can choose the number you would like or port over an existing one. We opted to port over our existing number since we have had it for so many years. Porting a number is an additional charge of $39.99, which seems a little high but in the long run the savings are worth it. The porting process was hassle free. They say it can take up to 6 weeks but ours was completed within 2. We have received 2 bills since setting up and only pay $4.38 a month. We are very pleased with the purchase and service we get.

5.0 out of 5 stars I used to have a "landline" (through an older service using my internet service)
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2024
It's been a few years and because I am older, I do like having a "real" phone in my house. Maybe that's an odd thing to younger people, but at my age, I remember having ROTARY DIAL phones in my parent's house! We had a few phones in the house, but just one phone number for all of us! So that's the past, yes, but I do feel a bit more comfortable with an actual handset like I used to. This Ooma service was very easy to set up and I have a phone number that is separate from my cell phone. That's a good thing too! For me, this Ooma was a comforting thing to set up and I now have that handset I wanted with its own phone number.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap phone service, works well...
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2024
Now that local phone providers are no longer required to maintain "POTS" lines ("Plain-Old-Telephone-Service"), VoIP (Voice-over-Internet-Protocol) is what everyone who needs a landline will soon be reduced to using.

If a dial tone service is needed 24/7/365 in your application (say like if you have a home elevator), position this device near your router/modem, connect via the short supplied ethernet cable to its socket on this device and on your router. Your traditional RJ11 plug (off which your phone is attached) will go in its socket on the Ooma device.

Run all these devices off of a continuous power supply device (IOW a battery-power-backup device) and you should have phone service that's as reliable as POTS ever was.

Plus, this approach is a lot less expensive, less than $10 monthly for one line... and you can get a new phone number assigned or port your old number (fee: about $40).

Also you get free long distance to USA numbers.
