5.0 out of 5 stars SRS-XE300 - SRS-XG300 - SRS-XG500 review
Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2023
I'm going to submit the same review for all three speakers. The reason I'm doing that is because my plan is to use them in my backyard around the pool in a party/group configuration.

Each speaker has its pros and cons obviously. But I'm going to speak about the size, weight and sound compared to each other. All three have excellent build quality and look really sharp. Each has a really nice fabric accompanied with rubberized plastic that's easy to grip. Each unit also had a nice heavy/dense feel to it. I'm assuming that's attributed to battery size, considering the runtime that these are stated to have. I have not tested the endurance of the batteries yet but will follow up with that as I know more.

SRS-XE300 X-Series: this one really punches above its weight. The sound for such a small speaker is actually really good. And it has a surprising amount of bass for its size and the clarity of the treble is wonderful. The configuration of the speaker openings are quite strange on this model, and you wouldn’t think it would be effective but it really sounds good but correct physical placement of the speaker is the key to get great lows-mids-highs from this. I was quite surprised at the quality of sound for the lowest price.

SRS-XG300 X-Series: this is a nice sounding speaker and it really has a great size and weight to it. I was a little disappointed as I thought that it should have had a lot more bass compared to the SRS-XE300 but it does have a sufficient amount. Maybe the smaller XE300 just surprised me with the amount of bass that it has? I ordered a package unit that included a case that is of decent quality. The nice part about the case is that it has a small compartment to house the included USB C charging unit.

SRS-XG500 X-Series: this thing is really stout and gets really loud if that's what you want, while still sounding great. For a speaker the size of an old style boombox, the bass will thump your skull. One of the cons for this model is that it doesn't charge via USB C. It uses a barrel tip charger while the other two use USB C. It would be nice if Sony made them all consistent. And compared to the other 2 speakers, this one feels like the battery isn’t as heavy in comparison to its size. Not sure if that will impact battery life as I’ve not tested that yet.

The first time I tried the party/group speaker configuration the sound volume was imbalanced out of each speaker. The way to rectify that is to turn the volume to zero on your Bluetooth device after you've created the group to level-set their volumes at 0. At that point all of their volumes should stay in sync when you volume up via Bluetooth.

Full disclosure, I bought the XE300 and the XG500 refurbished. The XG300 was brand new. The refurbished models that I bought were in excellent shape. I would recommend powering them up and playing them for 4-5 hours to make sure that they are in good shape after being refurb’d.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have problems with sound try this.

This speaker when I first received it had a troubling sound that almost sounded like a the cone on the right side was blown out. If things got too bassy it sounded like it was going to pop the speaker. I took it apart as I thought there was something rattling around in there. There was nothing. The actual culprit was the mesh on the baffle wasnt glued down all the way on one side. I was blown away that it was having that drastic of an effect on the sound. I fixed it with super glue and it works absolutely flawlessly. First pic is the side without super glue, second pic is the superglued one. Kinda matched the mesh. After fixing it, This is the best sounding portable speaker I've ever heard. Lasts days on one charge. This thing is a masterpiece. I take it everywhere, so it's a little dinged up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks and functions like new!

I was searching around for a bluetooth speaker when i came across this gem for$169! The speaker was being sold a refurbished unit. Didn't even know that Sony released this beast. Did some browsing around and apparently this speaker is a direct competitor of the JBL Boombox. Well, I thought this was a great deal. New units were selling for $450! Took a chance on purchasing one and I'm glad I did! The unit shipped in a plain brown cardboard box and the speaker was wrapped and sealed in plastic. The ends of the speaker was packed with molded foam for protection. Unboxed the speaker and it came with about 80% charge. The unit did not have any original stickers or tags but a Sony branded power supply and cord was provided in the box. Upon inspecting the unit, this speaker looked brand new out of the box with no imperfections. Take a look at the attached pictures. The speaker paired well and all functions tested ok. Be sure to download the Sony Music Center app to fine tune the sound of the speaker. I'll have to agree with other reviews that this unit sounds a bit warm and muffled out of the box. Give it a tweak with an equalizer and the high end will balance out nicely. The bass on this speaker is just awesome. Nice full and loud! For $169, it's a steal!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of equipment.

Good sound overall with very deep bass. (Don’t even use the extra bass feature). Nice looking and no paring issues at all. Long battery life with announcement when it’s low (pretty cool).
Just wish the hi’s were a little cleaner, but I realize I can be an audio snob.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great BT Speaker Better than Expected

I ordered the SRS-XG500 because I am picky about sound and I was blown away by how much bass it can produce and the battery life is insane. I would highly recommend this if it is in your budget and is not too large. The only downside I can think of is the charger is not a USB charger, which means I have to keep track of the charger. Keep in mind, this is not going to produce bass like a 12" sub, but it does a very good job for what I was wanting.
