Absolutely impressive. Lots and lots of power on demand, zero noise or hum. The clarity is unbelievable out of this unit.

I'm keeping it as a backup for when my integrated just doesn't bring it to the party

Solid professional amplifier

This is my second unit, and it was purchases as a "renewed" item from Amazon. The only thing I noticed that was "wrong" with the unit is that the right channel cannot be placed in the 1.4V (less sensitive) mode. The higher gain is always on. I decided that for my purposes, that was not worth worrying about. The amplifier has a high enough signal to noise ratio that I put the left channel in high gain (0.775V) mode, and started using it. The $100 saved buying a renewed item is sufficient compensation.

The fan cycles -- about once an hour it runs for a thirty seconds or so even if the amplifier is at idle. I can understand **why**, but it would be less startling if the fan's slowest operation were slower. The temperature in the amplifier is not high when the fan runs; it seems to be purely elapsed time that causes the fan to run. The fan in this unit is a bit louder than the other one I own. It could be the difference between the XLS 1000 and the XLS 1002, or it could be that the position in the rack makes it louder. In a live sound use, the fan noise would not be an issue; at home it is sometimes audible.

Overall, the amplifier has excellent build quality. The case and the front panel attach directly to the rack in an exact fit. The connectors are well installed, and nothing is loose. Unfortunately, the information panel will not stay "on," making it impossible to display the operating temperature or the power supply voltage on a continuous basis.

The amplifier is being used to with Magnepan 1.7i speakers in a 31x19 foot room that is very nearly anechoic. The pair of Crowns are fed from the output of a dbx PA2 signal processor with the high pass crossover set to 45Hz, using a 48db/oct Butterworth. The original XLS 1000 has been assigned subwoofer duty.
