5.0 out of 5 stars Best range exhaust fan I’ve found.

The media could not be loaded.
I have a downdraft range exhaust system (see photos) next to my kitchen range which does a decent job removing cooking orders and grease but definitely has its limitations. This is especially true when using a splatter guard. The guard prevents the downdraft exhaust system effectively catching smoke, grease and odors, but with the Range Hood’s base extension the splatter guard is no longer is an impediment to odors, grease and smoke being removed. I have used the AirHood Wired Range Hood twice this past week and am very pleased with its performance. A good purchase; the AirHood is now a permanent part of my kitchen arsenal.

Update: Still giving the AirHood Wired Range Hood 5 stars. I went back and looked at the most negative reviews, and some valid observations. The Range Hood is noisy as I expected it would be, especially given the substantial carbon and steel mesh filters. Even used along with my downdraft exhaust fan, odors escape (open floor plan in my home). Noise level too high to carry on a conversation with someone else in the kitchen, but then I am a solo cook - no one else allowed in the kitchen when I am cooking.

4.0 out of 5 stars IT MOSTLY WORKS! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2024
As an apartment dweller with a range hood that doesn't vent to the outside, there are certain types of cooking that I avoid because of all the smoke that results. Then I read a solid review for the AirHood on Serious Eats, a website for avid cooks like myself, and I decided to give it a try... but I wasn't fully convinced it would really work.

So my test was simple: unbox it, plug it in, then see how it does when I sear a rib-eye steak in a blazing hot cast iron pan. Normally, that would produce a guaranteed fog of smoke that sets off the smoke alarms and lingers in the apartment for days. If the AirHood didn't work, it was going right back to Amazon. But to my surprise, it really worked! There was virtually no smoke in my apartment after searing. A few things you should know:

As others have noted, it's really loud, surprisingly so for its size. Perhaps no louder than my range hood fan on high, but that's really loud, too.

It did not remove odor nearly as well as it did smoke -- I could definitely smell that I had seared a steak in the apartment, which isn't a bad thing, but if odor removal is a high priority for you, this may not be your device.

If you plan to use this with a gas stove, be aware that the manufacturer recommends the wired version only. I primarily use gas, but I have an outlet near my stove, so plug-in wasn't a problem. I am thrilled that the AirHood will finally allow me to do certain kinds of frying and searing that I've avoided for years because of the smoke problem. I thought seriously about giving this five stars, but deducted on star for not removing odors as effectively as I believed it would. Nevertheless, if the smoke issue I have wtih the range hood fan sounds all too familiar to you, I highly recommend the AirHood.

Thanks for taking the time to read my review and I hope you find it helpful in making a buying decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Little Hood is a Game-Changer!

This portable AirHood is actually pretty sweet! The mint green color is super cute, and get this - it's way quieter than that noisy built-in hood that came with my stove. They nailed it with the cord length too - no awkward stretching or trying to find an outlet that's close enough.
Real talk - it does exactly what it's supposed to do without being a pain to use or clean. Plus, with both charcoal and stainless-steel filters doing the heavy lifting, it handles cooking smells like a champ.
Bottom line: If you're looking for something that works well and looks good doing it, this hood's got you covered. Bonus points for not sounding like a jet engine in your kitchen!

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Expensive For Too Little Results
Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2024
We ordered this exhaust fan based on a Consumer Report recommendation. Whereas our experience with CR has always been great, this one is a big loser. It is unique and we loved the design but it's got to have good utility and this exhaust fan falls way too short. First, the design is clumsy with the power cord being difficult to replace in the base for storage. Second, the noise makes it very difficult to use while cooking if you want to talk in the kitchen, watch TV or listen to music. The third problem is that it just doesn't work well. The suction doesn't move cooking smoke and it is completely ineffective in clearing cooking odors. Since we purchased this specifically for removing cooking odors, it's too expensive not to return.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty useful but also loud

A great solution if you don’t have a good vent in your kitchen. We use it in place of the less than effective vent in our kitchen.

It helps.

Install very loud. I mean as loud as a vacuum cleaner or a power tool in a shop. We have to wear hearing protection when we use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works better than expected!
Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2024
My wife and I recently moved into a new apartment and it doesn't have a hood vent for the oven. I cook with cast iron a lot and sometimes when I sear cuts of meat it creates a bit of smoke. My wife being asthmatic is very sensitive to any amount of smoke. I bought this product to see if it could help reduce the smoke in the air and it worked great. I was a little skeptical at first due to how small it is, but it performed pretty great. My only complaint is the fact that I love the smell of cooking steak, but this seemed to reduce that too. In fairness, it does advertise that as a feature and it may come in handy because my wife hates the smell of cooking bacon (crazy, I know).

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the design but wish it’s not so loud

I really like the look and the way the front and back covers are magnetically attached. It’s very easy to open it to change the filter and clean it. I also like the way the power cord can be tucked away into its own base. It looks good on the countertop. I use it additionally to our over the range microwave vent. By itself it’s not very powerful but it’s enough for me. However, my one complaint is that it’s really loud. Sometimes I get a noise warning from my Apple Watch because it’s too loud.

The air hood that came with my apartment doesn’t work well, and the house is always full of food smells. However, this portable hood is quite useful! Recommended for apt use! It’s a great value for the money—the airflow is strong enough, and it features activated carbon to eliminate all odors!
