This review is based on a my short term experience with the product. I’ll update later after using it for several months.
This range vent was purchased to replace a failed over-the-range microwave oven. I downsized to a smaller counter top microwave and upgraded the stove venting.
The delivery was fast and despite a damaged box the vent hood was intact. The seller has little control over the delivery. The product was well protected inside the large box. I opened the box and inventoried the contents and was surprised to find a remote control that wasn’t in the product description. I don’t see myself using a remote control to control the appliance, but it works.
Before installing the vent hood all of the functions were tested and one of the puck lights was flickering. Support was contacted via e-mail, as their phone number just immediately goes to some music, and their response was quick the next day. They asked for a video of the problem and mailing information. A couple days later i received an e-mail that a replacement light was being mailed. After a couple more days the replacement light was delivered. And replacement of the light was an easy process that is in the included user booklet.
During this time I was preparing the mounting location and ducting to work with this new vent hood. This process is the most work! This vent hood is the fourth appliance to go over my stove and none of them had the same mounting and ducting. So this new vent required modifications to the ductwork that beyond this review. I didn’t use the included screws and plastic drywall anchors because I prefer different screws and better anchors, but that hardware was included. Also, know that it may be necessary to add blocking, relocate ductwork, and either add or relocate the electrical box for power that should be located in the cabinet above the vent hood. And to be fair, these requirements would be necessary for most any over-the-range externally venting appliance. And for safety reasons I highly recommend finding someone with the appropriate skill sets if those tasks aren’t something that you do regularly; especially the electrical work. Also, a 900cfm exhaust fan will pull a lot of air from your home and a return air solution is necessary to prevent backdrafting.
The vent hood was mounted by the time that the replacement LED puck light was delivered. So I popped in the new light, connected the wire and it’s fully functional.
Here’s some pros and cons:
- The 4K temperature color LED lights are bright and dimmable, and easily replaced
- The two fans are very powerful with four settings and definitely better than the pathetic fan on my old over-the-range microwave
- The noise level isn’t too bad on the lower settings, but is louder on the higher settings, which is to be expected. It’s still quieter than the old microwave stove vent that it replaced
- The motion control is convenient and in this model is located on the top of the vent hood, so it might be difficult to control if your short or in a wheelchair, but there’s an included remote control to help.
- The stainless steel vent filters are easy to remove and reinstall
- The black glass front and top of the hood goes well with existing black appliances.
- It has a long, attached electrical cord.
- Customer support was quick to assist.
Cons:
- the metal enclosure is pretty thin, so proper mounting is critical to keep the metal from flexing and the vent from vibrating against the cabinet. This goes for any similar appliance. I raised the vent into place using a DIY lift solution of stacked wood, then screwed the enclosure onto the cabinet and wall framing that was created to support the vent.
- The black glass is nice, but collects fingerprints, which is why the motion control is helpful
- Cleaning the vent top will activate the fan and lights, but it’s easy to turn them off.
- I wish that the brand name on the hood front was more subdued.
- The IR remote control requires a line of sight to the top of the vent hood. So holding the remote underneath the hood won’t work.
Summary: my initial impression is that this vent hood is priced well for the feature set, has two powerful fans, convenient motion control for when your hands are dirty, the stove top lighting is bright, yet dimmable, and customer support is responsive and e-mail based. I can’t comment on reliability at this point, but would recommend this appliance if the style suits your home.
