Our family refrigerator 15 cu ft has served us well. But now that the children are gone its time to downsize. Moreover, PSE offered a $25 incentive to recycle/replace our old refrigerator.
I conduct a trial test to answer the question "Can we live with a smaller refrigerator?" I unboxed my vintage 1990 dorm refrigerator (2 cu ft) from the garage. To my surprise it still works. However, the freezer wouldn't keep anything frozen. Solid frozen Ice cream would melt witin 3 hours.
I ordered this item based on the refrigerator capacity of 3.2 cu ft. the dimensions - 16"x16"x35".
The package arrive undamaged; however, the refrigerator door would NOT remain closed. Upon further examination I noticed the bottom hinge was bent (see picture). I also notice some residue on rhe bottom. I wanted to continue my evaluation, so I used a secure strap to keep the door close.
I setup the refrigerator in a bedroom (10'x15') to evaluate the noise. After several hours of use I determine the thermostat set at 4 achieves the perfect balance of freezer/refrigerator temperature and power consumption. I inserted a temperature probe in both freezer and refrigerator compartments.
Results:
After 29 minutes the temperature of the freezer compartment was 0.4 °F and temperature of the refrigerator compartment was 37.6 °F. Also the compressor turned OFF.
I placed the small ice tray in the freezer and it took 55 minutes to turn into ice cubes.
Overall the refrigerator performed well. A soft humming sound can be heard when the compressor is ON, but is tolerable. Both refrigerator and freezer compartments achieved optimal temperature as suggested by the FDA.
However, similar 3.2 cu ft refrigerators are priced under $180. Remove 1 ???? for higher price.
I'm unable to give this 4 ???? because of the refrigerator door issue. I will contact the company to see if a replacement hinge can be shipped.
For now, I award 3 ????. I will revise my rating if warranted.
