This little “range hood” works!

I bought this with some apprehension as I couldn’t believe it would actually perform very well. My kitchen was built in 1938 and there was no room for a range hood without a major remodel. I decided to try this out and I am so happy I did. It works very well to “suck up” the smoke and steam. Of course it’s not like a huge range hood, but it does work great. My husband and I love it. It is small enough to sit next to the cooktop and powerful enough to keep the kitchen smoke free!

Works when you remember to use it

We have a tiny kitchen with no fan ventilation at all. We frequently set off our smoke alarms when cooking and often have greasy, lingering odors in the house. The main problem I've found with this contraption is, that although it is relatively small, because of our small kitchen it has to be stored away on a shelf. Since we've cooked in our kitchen for over a decade without a fan, we always forget about it until our house is filled with oily smells.

Last night, when making tofu katsu, I made a batch without the fan. As the kitchen started filling up with the familiar greasy smell I remembered the fan and set it up over the skillet. It has two settings and they're both pretty loud. On the highest setting you could not listen to music or have a conversation while it's running. I put in on the lower setting and could visibly see the smoke being sucked up into it.. I left it running while we ate and have to say that the the smell was much less noticeable after the second round of frying than the first.

It does work, it is attractive, but it takes up room. You have to plan to use it, but I think once you get in the habit it is a good addition to kitchens without any other exhaust fans.

I use this to keep even the tiniest amount of smoke from happening with my indoor grill. I love to grill in the winter but don't like the effects of the smoke in my house. This is a powerhouse. I was skeptical but it works very well. Buy the extra filters so you are ready when you need to replace them.

Definitely Helps

I changed my review from a 4 to a 5. After using it several times and it really helps. We only have a microwave vent fan that vents back into the room. It really doesn't do much at all.
The CIARRA Portable Range Hood definitely helps considerably. It doesn't eliminate odor 100% but it comes close. We cooked pan seared lamb chops which generates a fair amount of smoke and odor. Careful placement near stove top is very important to try to catch as much as feasible. It really helped.
Very satisfied and recommended.

Useless kitchen tool

I purchased this product to try and help reduce smoke when cooking in my kitchen. I live in an apartment and don’t have a range hood. I wasn’t necessarily hoping for this to completely eliminate any cooking smoke, but I was hoping it would help reduce the frequency of my smoke detector going off. needless to say this product did absolutely nothing including not capturing any residue whatsoever. The icing on top was after the third time using it the plastic began to melt, and I had to throw out the entire thing. I guess that’s just $200 down the drain. I don’t recommend at all for obvious reasons.

My kitchen vent at home just doesn’t do the trick so when I saw this little item I thought. Why not?
Packaging very sturdy and so is this portable vent, but unfortunately it has to be right on top of stove with an opened window close by. I tried using it in every different way but it’s just OKAY. I needed more than just ok.

Airflow is the number one key factor for such products, So I tested!

The described airflow: 100cfm
Tested airflow with brand new filter while it was cool:
with OEM HEPA filter: 67cfm
with default grease filter: 92cfm
without any filter: 180cfm
The number 92cfm may looks close to the description however to meet the needs for indoor BBQ it needs not only HEPA filter but also a thick Carbon filter. So I bought the same brand carbon filter the airflow drops to 50cfm. Not to mention in real BBQ scenarios it will be heated by hot smoke which reduces electric current, furthermore normally it will need to work with slightly clogged filters that could cause more air pressure drop. I guess in real test it would only provide 30cfm of airflow

I’ve tried my best to improve it, in case other uses need, here are my tricks: adding a face shield as a hat on it to have higher coverage on smokes. Or use a 6.3” diameter HEPA filter in the front and remove the grease filter which can boost the airflow from 67cfm to 120cfm, I got that HEPA from my air purifier, in fact most air purifier HEPA filter would work better than the OEM’s 4” OD filter

I compared it with rivals and its air flow drops faster when with higher pressure drops (like adding more filters). I found the fan blades are of much smaller diameter which is around 4”. The rival has 6” fan blades that only produces 140cfm airflow without filter , however it won’t drop as significant when adding filters .

I will return this, it is expensive but under performing.
