5.0 out of 5 stars PicShop on the Kindle Fire and more: Excellent photo editor
Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2012
Luckily for us, there's a growing variety of photo editing apps for the Kindle Fire and other Android devices available here. Some are quite good for basic tasks, and some just don't cut it, to put it frankly. There are freebies and paid apps, so sometimes it's difficult to pick a good one that will meet the needs of a photographer who is looking for a higher level editing tool.

The PicShop photo editor is one of the good ones, especially with the newest 2.5.0 version, which fixed a few small but irritating bugs. At 17.5MB it's not exactly small, and it will take a little less than three minutes to download to your device, but once installed it's well worth the time and space. You then have a complete photo editing suite, with plenty of filters and effects from which to pick.

You can read the specs here, which include the essential red-eye & blemish removal, image cropping, brightness & contrast, image sharpening & blurring, and a lot more. For this user, the social integration with Facebook and email have proven to be invaluable, though I have yet to try it with Twitter.

The developer also offers the PicShop Lite app, a freebie that I first started with, then upgraded to this one. As far as photo editing apps go, as one who does a lot of on-the-fly editing of uploaded images, this app ranks up there with the more costly PicSay Pro, which offers slightly different functionalities. Both of these have proven to be among the best on the Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD 8.9" for this user, but your experiences may be different depending on your Android device.

    Update 4/2/2013:

Installed this 2.8.2 version on my Samsung Galaxy S III, and it is a good upgrade. Have had no problem with uploads to Facebook and there's a definate improvement in the layer resize performance with either the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" or the Galaxy S III.

This PicShop Photo Editor offers much to casual and pro photographers alike. It does an excellent job with editing and transforming your photos. It's easy to use and highly recommended to photographers of all levels.

1.0 out of 5 stars Customer Support Is NON-EXISTENT!
Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2012
I loved this app - it worked very well and was pretty intuitive; however I've had an issue with the app for MONTHS and have not been able to get ONE response to my many emails to the developer.

PROBLEM - Images will no longer save, post

I can alter images all day long, however the images will no longer save ANYWHERE.
Until the recent update - CUSTOM save option would not even display, where I could see if it the images were being placed somewhere unknown(even though searching all files failed to find any)

When I try to save - its goes through processing as if it is...but nothing.

I wasn't certain if this was related to the Jellybean update it was around that time, but I've not seen this complaint in other reviews or something else. Trying to get any help/response from the developer is about as effective as trying to save something I've done in this app.

I saw what could have been a similar review today and a note that the "lite" app still saves - so I tried that...and low-and behold it does...however you don't have all of the features.

I don't know if the "save" screen should be the same and it is not in the PRO version - missing Email and share option.

If anyone else has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Battle of the Photo Editors
Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2012
    Test devices:
Samsung Epic, Cyanogen 9 beta 3 (Android 4)
Viewsonic gTablet, TeamDRH ICS 1.2 (Android 4)

Given that one of primary uses of smartphones is taking pictures, it's no wonder why there are so many different pic editors on the market. Having dug into several dozen, I can say that not one of them is perfect, each lacking something here or there, some feature(s) that another one has, isn't as easy to use, etc. Though I keep two different editors installed, my default goto editor has been PicSay Pro, which is what I'll be using as a comparison in this review. In terms of cost, PicShop and PicSay Pro are pretty close, with just a dollar separating them. Both have free trial versions, so you can have a chance to check them out before plopping down your cash.

As expected, I found a lot of things with PicShop that weren't up to the caliber of PicSay Pro, and PicSay Pro lacked some of the features of PicShop. You can share right from your gallery into PicSay Pro, but not PicShop. Exporting pictures is quite limited with PicShop, with only exporting to your device, Twitter, or Facebook. PicSay Pro on the other hand can also export to anything you can normally share to on your device, plus set as image for a contact or set as your wallpaper. PicSay Pro also lets you save the image locally where you want and under any name you want, while PicShop saves in the same location as the original photo under whatever name it chooses. It's not all bad for PicShop though. It can save in more formats automatically, upscaling your image on its own when needed. Resaving an edited image results in a new file with a new name, so the original isn't overwritten. In PicSay Pro, you have to set the new name manually. Filters, effects, and additional features again goes it PicSay Pro, which has a much larger set of these. PicShop fights back though with the ability to layer images, and use frames on your final output. The UI for both apps is pretty easy to use, though they differ significantly. PicShop may win this argument by a smidgen, because of it's larger buttons, sliders, and filter previews.

So far, not a single issue with performance of PicShop. It worked well, and at my slightest touch. Stability has been excellent as well. While I'm not ready to give up on PicSay Pro, I'll be keeping PicShop around as my new backup editor.

*Note: Apps can get updates and change over time, for better or worse. Please note the date of this review, as it may contain info that is no longer accurate.*
