3.0 out of 5 stars For older children...

This game is little more advanced than other children's counting apps, and then you notice it needs access to GPS tracking. I'd skip this one altogether.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's Sharpen Those Little Minds!
Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2015
The Counting Kingdom is a wonderful GAME to help your child practice his addition. You (or your child) will be the defender of the castle, and must destroy advancing monsters with spells. Each monster has a number on it, and can be destroyed only by a spell that has the same number. You can select multiple ADJACENT monsters, then destroy them with a single spell with the same number as their SUM. If there are no spells with the correct sum, you can ADD two spells to create one that does. There are also potions that let you adjust a monster's number by ADDING/SUBTRACTING the potion number to/from it.

This game is not only FUN, but also CHALLENGING because you have to decide how to combine the monsters and spells. As you progress, new potions & larger numbered monsters come into play. No wonder the developer describes this game as "for kids 6-8 and beyond"! However, I am sure there will be some smart kids out there who might be younger but still up to the challenge. In the Map, the top right target icon lets you adjust the difficulty level, although I am not sure how to apply it to a specific castle (level).

Under the hood I found NOTHING that you should be worried about. It asks for the Internet Access and the Precise Location Permissions, but it NEVER ACTUALLY USED THEM. In its main menu, you can tap the gear icon to access its settings. You can adjust the volume, select one of the available interface languages, and also read up on its Privacy Policy. In its policy it mentioned the use of Flurry, but it is NOT PRESENT in this version. I am guessing the permissions are related to Flurry which was used in a previous version but has since been removed. Hopefully the developer will see fit to remove those permissions as well in a future update for the ultimate peace of mind. This game exits cleanly too.

I have no hesitation in recommending that you get this game while it's free. Even at its regular price of $2.99 I would still recommend it if it's within your budget.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good children's app but it does contain fine GPS tracking in it and it should be removed.

When the app opens there is a gear for the settings. There is also a privacy policy stating no ads, no IAPs and they do not collect personal information about the people that use the app. It does state that the app collects data using Flurry Analytics but in my scans Flurry was not installed. They do track the location of the tablet with Fine locations GPS. I do not like this in a child's app. They also state that they comply with COPPA, Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. The app does play with the airplane mode on so the GPS is disabled.

You can watch the intro story to the game which is drawn in colorful cartoon style. Monsters appear with numbers on them and you touch them in combinations to add up their numbers to reach a target number. You may not need all of the monsters. After you have touched the monsters and gotten the right number you touch the target number and the monsters are destroyed.

The graphics are good and the music and sound effects are well done. This is a 5 star app but I deducted 1 star for the use of GPS location in a children's app.

Each level is different and it is fun to play. The objective is to quickly kill the monsters before they get to the castle wall with their battering rams. If they do then you lose.

Permissions:
* Read phone status and identity
* Precise location both GPS and Network based
* Full network access
* View network connections
* Control vibration
* Prevent tablet from sleeping

This app contains no analytics, adware or malware. It does track where the tablet is and this is unacceptable IMHO in a children's app.

The app installed 87.25MB with 19.12MB going to my device's internal memory and 68.12MB going to my SD card. It did this automatically.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just Say NO to GPS Tracking Your Child Within 10'!

GPS tracking in a children's application is unacceptable. Otherwise, the permissions aren't terrible - though the internet access shouldn't be there either - nor are there concerning third-party code concerns.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fine GPS-NOT Acceptable!
Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2015
I rarely write reviews, but I had to add my comment on fine GPS being in a young child's app. As far as I know there is no acceptable reason for including this, and in my opinion is almost borderline criminal. There are too many great safe kid's apps to take a chance with this one-even free. This seems to be a cute app, please devs fix this, and I'll be glad to revise this review!

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids and I myself enjoy playing this game
Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2015
My kids and I myself enjoy playing this game. For an adult, it does get a little repetitive after a while, but that's part of any math drill. The game play is simple and cute, introduction them to a basic table top tower defense game. There's a reasonable story to engage the kids to the next level. It also has them thinking about resource management as to if they should spend a potion or not.

Here's some details about the game's history, release date and other details to help raise awareness. This game as been out on Steam since August 5, 2014 on MacOS and Windows XP ( store.steampowered.com/app/302750 ). It's usually on sale during the Steam Holiday sales. If you have challenges with the tablet version, try the Desktop/Laptop version.

They also don't mention to their detriment, the awards they've won:
* PAX 10 2014
* Grand Prize Winner: MassDiGI Game Challenge 2014
* Winner: Big Indie Pitch Jr. 2014
* Indie Prize Showcase USA 2014

As a free app of the day, it's definitely worth getting.

If someone has issues with the permissions, you might want to email them at [email protected] per the Google Play page. That's the only way to get it fixed.

And if you're worried about it (or a more cautious type of Android user like my family) you'll likely be running CyanogenMod, leveraging Android's Privacy Guard, installed NoRoot Firewall, and other protections as well. But that's not a reflection of this game's permissions, but my own daily practices of protection & paranoia :-)
