5.0 out of 5 stars Great Media Player
Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2014
I really like this media player. I haven't tried any other models or types, this is my first. So I cannot make comparisons. But, I like that I can connect my 2TB external hard drive to it and have it play on my external monitor or my TV with no computer involved.

4.0 out of 5 stars WDTV works well but added the Co-Star
Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2012
I have two WDTV Live Media players that I bought to connect my living room and bedroom HDTVs to my home wi-fi network so I could play my 300gig of commercial and home video on either TVs. To do that I have a Netgear router that lets you plug my 300g drive into the router, making all the content available through the WDTV players. Of course, the WDTV units also gives you (LIMITED) access to the internet.

Since buying the WDTV units I have just purchased the new Vizio CO-STAR which does what I originally bought the WDETV media players plus much, much, much more. Check out the Co-Star at the Vizio.com web page. The Co-Star is a Google version of what we expect the Apple TV will be. But the Co-Star includes a Chrome browser so you have COMPLETE access to the internet. It also has a feature that lets you watch a live TV show in a corner insert while surfing the web on the Chrome browser. (Picture'n'picture) And works on a wireless netowrk. SO... while I liked the WDTV units while they were hot....they are less hot now. Tech changes soooooooooooooooooo fast.

HOWEVER, since playing with the Co-Star for a month or so I must say that it has quite a few annoying "quirks" which you may have read about in other reviews. When it works it is cool. But little things like no ON light or periodic locking up show that a version 2 might be needed. The features mentioned above are great so I have decided to keep the WDTV connected by Ethernet cable and use the Co-Star wirelessly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ads in an app I PAID MONEY FOR....
Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2014
My main reason for 1 star is that it has ads on a . Paid app. I would think when I am paying 3$ for an app I would get a non ad version of the app. I tried playing media from my bad and it played it fine

2.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly right yet!

I bought the WD TV Live Media Player to tie together all the products I use to entertain myself. Some features I was looking for was listed as being supported, particularly ISO video files, Spotify Premium, and playlists created with ".m3u" extensions. The first problem I ran into was the time it took to import the list of over 75,000 music files from my external WD hard drive. Not the files themselves but just the indexing took over 3 days. Then every time a change was made to a file it would take another 3 to 4 days to update. It was very frustrating and a huge waste of time. Next was the ISO video files: they are not recognized unless they are on the internal drive of the WD Live Player. I have over 100 movies in the ISO format on a external drive. So in order to watch one of them I must transfer it to the internal drive which takes hours for 1 movie. Again a huge waste of time. Then there is the Spotify App.: I have a premium account. I use it a lot on the computer because it will incorporate my files on my external hard drive and their millions of music files. I have created playlists that I enjoy that includes all types of music. The Spotify App on the WD Live does not recognize the music on the external drive. So try listening to a "Best of the 60's" playlist without the Beatles. It just doesn't work. The last note is with ".m3u" files. They do not import correctly. The WD Live drops files that are correctly indexed so you have to go back and add them in manually at the end of the playlist then take the time to move them to the spot in the playlist you want them. Again a huge waste of time.

I have spoke to WD Live support a few times and they are aware of these problems even though I not sure the understand the frustration. They say wait for the next software upgrade which doesn't address many of these problems. For now I have installed a old computer with the Apps and use it instead of this device. Every now and then I'll check it for updates and functionality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Otherwise I have been very happy with this unit
Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2015
I'm very impressed with the way this will play just about anything you throw at it. However it recently lost it's ability to view my files on my server (PC), and took me ages to get them back again. I could still access most of my files using Plex server on my PC, which the WDTV could play, but there are some things that the WD will do that Plex won't play, so it was a frustration. Otherwise I have been very happy with this unit. Have been using about 2 year now I'd guess.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommend but do have a couple of quibbles
Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2013
It really does just about all I expected, but falls a bit short in two main areas or I would have given it five stars.

Area 1

Explanation - Lack of detailed instruction. As is today's practice, paper instruction on what to do is very basic. Those that don't need much (for example, those that came of age in the very high tech era - the last five years or so or those that are tech professionals) probably take to this device like a duck to water.

Those that do (and I among that number) have to figure it out by themselves. I actually am fairly tech savvy or I wouldn't have bought this device. But I was extremely disappointed to find that the manual (which is available on the 'Net in pdf form) made references to screens which the manufacturer in its wisdom has apparently changed. This would probably be fine if the manual were revised - it appears that was too much to ask.

Area 2

Lack of a general explanation of what can be achieved. I had my preconceptions, which thank God were mostly borne out. Also, when you research the 'Net enough, you learn quite about what this little devil can do.

I would highly recommend it in spite of these quibbles. To me, it's great strength is that is compatible with the technology of one or two decades ago. Too many developers assume that we have the latest hardware and software in every area. I for one don't and will resist this as long as what I bought it in the past satisfies my needs.
