5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendously powerful, but fun, learning tool
Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2014
Gosh, I can't say enough good things about this app. I have already reviewed the "sister" app to this app, Stack the States. This app is a tremendously powerful learning tool, especially for the visual learner, to learn the basic info of the worlds' countries. The whimsical "faces" on the countries provide a truly fun environment for learning the countries' shapes. The act of "stacking" the countries enables the player to truly "know" the borders of a country as well as their relative sizes.

One reviewer (a two-star review) indicated the app was "gimmicky" and did not provide enough detail and was not really a learning or studying tool to learn about countries. While it is true that the "flash card" for each country only has a limited amount of information (e.g. capitals, main languages, big cities, flag), that, in my opinion, is fine. My goal of getting this app was to learn all those intricate country borders in continents such as Africa and Europe where over the past 20 - 30 years, country names and borders have changed due to wars

Because of this app, I can identify all the countries in Africa and Europe...even those quirky eastern Europe countries whose borders have change frequently over the years. The way I use this is app is this:

    1) I study a given continent's map by clicking on each country and reading its "flash card". I try to "memorize" the country name, capital, and main language for five countries at a time.

    2) Then I go to the "game" where I get quizzed on the entire continent. I try to apply my newly gained knowledge (from the studying) in the game mode.

    3) After a while, I go back to study mode.

Following the above protocol I learned all the African countries, capitals, and languages in 1 1/2 weeks. The flags aren't as important to me to know but I find I'm learning them by "osmosis" just by playing the game and seeing the flags on the "flash cards".

It is true that this app doesn't have the suite of factoids about countries that you would find in a high quality Atlas. But I never expected this app to be as detailed as an Atlas. To me, this is a learning tool to memorize the shapes, names, and capitals of a country. A person should still refer to a good old-fashioned Atlas to learn the other details.

For what it's worth, my 4-year-old and 2-year-old play this game with me and they now know amazing things such as 1) where Belarus is located or 2) how big Russia is or 3) where Democratic Republic of Congo is located or 4) that there are two very tiny countries called Lesotho and Swaziland within South Africa, or 5) that Chile is "long and skinny" or 6) that Tasmania is a little island south of Australia or...I could go on and on. It's laughable to say this is not a learning tool. I defy you to teach a 4-year-old and 2-year-old the above information this quickly (they have been playing it with me for about 3 weeks) with any other medium.

It was never my goal to have my youngest children learning countries from this app. It just happened by them observing the game with me. Granted, I read and re-read the questions aloud to them so we play the game together interactively. But this is most definitely a learning tool. One of the finest. And my "big kids" (ages 9 and 11) are learning tomes of information about the world's countries from this app like nobody else in their respective grades.

This has been a very empowering app for our family. A

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this game as do my children (6
Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2014
I love this game as do my children (6, 8, and 10). We have spent many hours huddled around my phone playing this game together. My 6 and 8 year old children fare better on the Stack the States game, but still enjoy the challenge w/ Countries.

The core game is amazing in it's own right...but what makes it even better are the little laughs we get when we see a country look a certain way or a stack fall after a long battle w/ gravity and physics. Those little things make us keep going back for more...not to mention the add-on games are great too. It really gives the kids something to strive for, an achievement to work towards and a reward for continual pressing.

Like I said, we love this game.

A couple things i'd suggest for consideration...
    - Zoom - I think this would be a lot more enjoyable for things like map it, i'd rather fail knowing I stuck Vermont in the wrong place than just mash my fat finger in the North East and get it right. If ease of use for children is the concern, have easy and hard mode?
    - Accelerometer - Just a wish/dream mostly! But I think it'd be great fun for me and for the kids, if during stacking, you could present an option for the user to counteract the balance/gravity/physics. Not completely, but just a subtle nudge that might let them win by tilting the phone away from the sway. I mean we're doing it anyways, haha, you might as well give them something for the effort! haha

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming game... Excellent for teaching geography and relevant facts
Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2014
I read many of the reviews regarding this app. In light of the fact that reviews indicated that folks either hated it or loved it... I had to see for myself.

Well... This app is awesome! It does indeed make learning fun. It's perfect for my 11 year-old daughter. I'm enjoying the game as well.

At first I could not figure out how to control the way the countries dropped so they would stack well. I learned that, after getting a correct answer, you can just slide the country down and then "drop" it where you want it to be. You can even drop the country after sliding it immediately on top of your tower of countries. That aspect of the game makes it easier for younger ones to be better able to stack countries without getting frustrated.

The sound on this game can be muted if you prefer (it can get tiresome after a while).

Overall, I have to give kudos to the developers of this game. Based on the contrasting reviews regarding this game, you are just going to have to see for yourself how this game stacks up. (groan...)
