I love Abby Monkey and her apps. Abby Monkey is just such a fun character and kids will love her. Better than kids just loving it, this app includes activities that are based off proven learning methods.
The Montessori method of phonics moves away from learning the traditional ABC song and toward actually learning the sounds the letters make. These sounds are the building blocks of phonics, and this knowledge empowers young learners to move on to more difficult reading. Each sound is reinforced through seeing it in print, hearing it aloud, and connecting it to words. Building connections through various means is the key to learning, and this app understands that.
The game involves various levels that become unlocked as the previous ones are completed. Each level involves a set of letter sounds. This ensures players master letter sets one at a time before moving on, so they are sure to learn the entire alphabet of sounds. Each level includes 6 phases of matching games. The player has to match letters/sounds in a memory game, and then they get to identify animal names that begin with a certain sound. Animals are dragged into Abby's train car. As the player moves through the phases of each level, more animals and sounds must be selected correctly.
By focusing on letter sounds, how they're written, and how they sound in words, this app creates connections that make concepts easy to memorize. The tactile component of moving things on the screen and tapping aids learning in many individuals, and kids will remain engaged throughout this app's fun tasks. After completing part of a level, players get to collect a fun sticker and place it on a virtual board. I do wish this game included the customization of Abby's train like in previous apps, but this is a minor wish and doesn't take away from the educational aspects.
Kids will love the bright colors of this app. There are dozens of fun, happy animals throughout and the stickers are animal themed as well. Kids tend to love animals, so the engagement factor is definitely there. They are sure to feel great as they learn how to pronounce the names of their favorite animals. Both phonics beginners and more experienced learners can enjoy these games. As a tutor, I have used these methods even with older students who have reading difficulties. Sometimes you just have to go back to the basics, and this app makes it enjoyable. In fact, kids don't even realize they're learning because it's a game!
Between the encouraging professional voices, enticing illustrations, and smooth, exciting games, Abby Monkey Phonics is the perfect way to learn these crucial skills. I think this app is well worth the low price tag, and hours of educational entertainment are bound to ensue. Once upon a time, there was an island, an island of indescribable beauty and magnificence. There found a shelter the animals small and large, slimy and furry, savage and tame—all protected from evil hunters and curious eyes, supplied with food from the bountiful earth. Each year, a special event was held, when one, and only one, person from the whole humankind was selected and transported to the island (blinded, to preserve the island’s secrecy) to appreciate its beauty and spread the word about it, so that the island would never be forgotten.
The legend has it, that deep inside the rocky hill on the island, a treasure is kept. Yet, no one knows its secret anymore because the last humankind representative had enraged the animals on the island, and since then, the animals decided never to invite anyone again, and the island got lost in time and space.
All that remains from our knowledge is that through the whole island, a very special train goes. The train has a mind of its own and likes it when the passengers’ names start from certain sounds! It is said, that if someone was ever capable to fulfill all the train’s wishes, the train would transport the lucky being deep inside the rocks and reveal the island’s precious treasure!
