5.0 out of 5 stars I love this app but I would like to make something known...
Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2014
This app is impressive and very gorgeous to look at. It has a lot of info and is very interesting! The problem that I have with this app is that the content is based on the myth of the Big Bang and false sentiment that everything within the structure of this amazing universe is a cosmic accident. The belief that intelligence came from non-intelligence and that life came from non-life. Beware of the info within this app. Satan is subtle and the mind can be eroded by this type of trash. The Word of GOD plainly states that, "the heavens and the earth declare the glory of GOD!" Psalm 19:1 "In the beginning God..." Genesis 1:1. I just wanted to put out the warning to Christians who may download this app. Romans 3:4 " Yea, let God be true and every man a liar..." The truly sad reality is that all these great minds that God has given men are wasted on searching for answers to which the Word of God is the remedy. Lord God, thank you for who you are and that you loved wretched man enough to send the greatest gift that could be offered in the darling Lamb of the Almighty God. Thank you for the blood that was shed for the sins of the whole world. You are the One oh Lord; the great and mighty God who spoke into existence all that is in the earth and the heavens! Praise thy Holy name for evermore! The consummation of this age will soon be here and all those who refuse to bow the knee and to confess with their mouth that thou art the KING OF KINGS and LORD OF LORDS will stand in that great and terrible day of the Great White Throne Judgment will all of the wicked shall be judged according to their works and no man will be able to stand before thy greatness and thy glory for thy Word tells us of the awful site and terror of that day!

Rev 20:11-15
--11-- And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
--12-- And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
--13-- And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
--14-- And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Oh Lord may thy word pierce hearts and convict and draw men unto thee! Sir or ma'am, if you are reading this; please consider the danger of rejecting the salvation offered through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ! If you do not get saved and born again you will be one in the innumerable multitude standing before the Almighty with no place to flee from His great wrath! Lord God; save souls according to thy will! Amen!

3.0 out of 5 stars Full of potential.

An astronomy-themed FAotD? I'm all in. Distant Suns is packed with information on all kinds of celestial bodies, from planets to stars to Messier objects and even meteor showers and other oddities, sorted by month. Compared to some other 'star locater' type apps, it seems to have a bit of a learning curve, though, so some patience is needed. The layout is a bit on the tiny side on my Droid DNA, probably due to the high density 1080p display. It's not so bad that the app is overly difficult to use, but I'm having to do some squinting to see the tiny text labels. Stars and other objects appear very small on the main screen, and constellation lines are whisker-thin. In all, the display looks a little bare because of the thinness of everything. Another little niggle is the compass feature, which when toggled allows the phone's internals to determine the position of the sky in the app. This is useful if you just want to point your device up to the sky and figure out what you're looking at. The other sky apps that do this are smooth and buttery in movement; Distant Suns is a herky-jerky mess. While the performance of this feature will no doubt vary depending on your device's GPS and positional sensors, there needs to be a dampening feature. If there's one here, I haven't found it (yet).

Despite some of the minor hardware issues, I haven't had the crashing problems that others have reported. I was able to locate Sirius easily via two different methods. The first was going into the catalog of visible objects and selecting the dog star, which zoomed me right to its position. The other was turning on the compass and raising my phone up until I found it on screen and in my field of vision, then confirming it by using the crosshairs. Like all the other UI elements, the crosshairs are tiny. They also behave in a logical but odd fashion. When you tap and hold to activate them, they don't pop up under your finger. They appear just above and to the right of your finger press so as to be visible. You can then tap, hold and drag the crosshairs around until they center on an object, when an info box will appear. I had a very difficult time lining up the crosshairs exactly over smaller objects like stars and galaxies, again likely due to the high res display. But once centered, a wealth of technical information (the majority of which is over my head) is available.

Initial impressions are mixed, but this app has tons of potential. If they can do something about the tiny-ness of some of the UI elements, it will be a real corker of a sky app. I'm going to put it on my Acer Iconia 10" tablet soon and see if it's any easier to use on that larger device. I'll update the review if anything noteworthy comes up. Right now, it's a good catch for a free app, but probably not worth the $5.99 asking price any other time unless they can work out some of the glitches.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cannot update, cannot get support
Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2017
Same problem as other reviewers. Notified of update every single day, but it cannot update. Run the update routine, it downloads, it prompts for okay to install, I okay it, it indicates it is installing, and then reverts back to need update. And every day there's a new notification telling me to update. I have contacted support, it is clearly affecting many users, but there's been no feedback. One more week and I drop review from 3 stars to 1 and delete the app.
REVIEW UPDATE: Problem continues, cannot get any response from support. Daily nagging to update app turns this pricy paid app into being no better than an ad supported one. As I promised, I am adjusting my rating down to one star (zero stars really) and deleting this app from my device. Shame that developer refuses to respond to paid customers. Their contact page promises response in one to two days. Substitute days with the word weeks and it still would be a lie.
