I work as a tutor and purchased this app to use with some of my younger students. One in particular is very into animals right now, so I thought this would be a great little activity for him. I review every app I purchase to help others see if the selections are right for them and their children or not.
From the main menu of the app, users can select one of seven cartoon animal avatars, allowing for some nice personalization. Following avatar selection, users enter a menu with a selection of environments. These environments dictate the types of animals that appear during game play. This is wonderful, as children get to learn about the animals and their appropriate habitats. There is much to be gained from organization-based tasks for young children, and this app offers plenty of opportunities for that through its structure.
The game activity is the same throughout the app, but various environments keep it fresh. The animals vary according to the selected environment. A friendly voice asks the user to drag a specific animal or selection of animals into the train. Correct selections are met with praise, and an incorrect choice simply allows the user to try again. It is always encouraging. The ability to try again encourages learning in a friendly environment. It's perfect as far as this kind of activity is concerned. The app also helps build reading skills, as the animal names are listed at the top of the screen to remind users which animals should be brought to the train. Anything that encourages reading is great in my book, as kids often struggle with it upon entering school and well into the early grades.
You'd think this app would get repetitive for children, but it really doesn't. The children I have had try out this app remain entertained for hours, and this is especially true if they love animals. The app features dozens of animals to learn about, and it's really nice to see an app for younger children that includes some 'off-color' animals. Usually, all you get are dogs, cats, fish, mice, and other typical, common animals. With this app, your little zoologist can truly discover new animals, including the platypus, ostrich, and scorpion. There are also modes for colors, and identifying animals involves shape recognition. This subtle inclusion of various skills is the mark of a truly great learning app. It's no surprise to me that 22Learn has once again beautifully weaved multiple disciplines together.
Each environment and all the images featured in the app are full-color and nicely illustrated. I always enjoy the professional voiceovers, and kids really seem to enjoy the voices as well. Settings include the typical sound toggle and an option to turn off instructions being voiced, and that can become handy if you wish to provide more of a challenge or test reading skills. Each child will vary, but none of the children I tried the app with had problems completing the tasks. The app also tracks high scores, which the older children really enjoy if they are a little competitive. Overall, I found the Animal Train app to be age-appropriate, educational, and fun! I am happy to add this app to my teaching arsenal.

The game takes place through a game activity, during which children are asked to place the animals to the train in the order their names are written (and possibly pronounced).
There are nine progressively more difficult levels of this activity as the number of the animals to be placed gets longer and the time needed to do so shorter. The motivational component is the constant praise for successful efforts and the possibility of the top score improvement --don't miss the train, answer correctly and get more and more points! The educational interactive game your toddlers will love.
Abby Monkey® Preschool Animal Train is your yummy preschool lunchbox full of fantastic animals and trains!
In the Settings, the game can be modified so that the tasks (the order of the animals to be placed in the train) are read aloud, and therefore the app can be also suitable for very small children, who are just learning the animal names, colors and shapes!
Based on our twenty-year old experience in the development of educational games for kids, we made considerable effort to ensure that the design of this app is easy-to-use for this very special age category and that the whole app is as educational and fun as possible.
