Perfect App for Comic Fans

I'm not the most avid comic book fan in the world, but I have been through my fair share. In fact, it was thanks to this app that I've been through so many. It was one of the very first apps I purchased when I received my kindle fire and though there are many app purchases I regret making, this is not one of them. The design of the app is very professional and not ridiculously over-the-top like comixology. Everyone loves their super hero comics now and then, but for those of us that don't want to feel like children just because we enjoy reading comics from time to time, Comicat is your go-to app.

The menus are super intuitive. It's easy to sync your comics to your collection and just as easy to get rid of them when you're done. Comics are, by default, ordered by title, and very little organization needs to be made on your part as long as your metadata is correct before loading them into Comicat. Most users will probably be fine toggling the basic options to optimize their personal comic reading experience but for those that need a little bit more control, there are also more advanced options.

The actual reading experience is a delight too. There are three different size options, one that fits your screen, one that zooms in just a little bit to make it just a tad easier to read, and a third which lets you view the comic at its original scan size. You can access each of these sizes by double tapping the screen, which goes through the options in order each time you double tap. In other words, to resize, you don't even have to leave the page you're reading. You can tap anywhere on the page for this to work. For anyone concerned about how well comics read on a kindle fire, sometimes the text can be a little tough to read, especially if you're reading text heavy comics with a lot of info in those word bubbles, but this can easily be fixed by performing the aforementioned resizing, or just bringing the device closer to your face. I rarely need to resize from the normal "fit to screen" mode, but hey I'm young, maybe my eyes are just too good. In any case, if its tough to read then this is the fault of the original scan or due to limitations of the device, not so much the app itself.

Also, for those that are into this sort of thing, the app keeps track of your stats such as how many comics you have in your total catalog, the size they take up, the amount of total comics and pages that you've read, etc. It's a neat little app with a great design and no glaring flaws.

One other thing to appreciate is how quickly Mean Labs responds to its customers concerns. Just in this review section here, you can see them responding to reviews both positive and negative with thanks to the positive reviews and tips and suggestions for those that were frustrated and experiencing issues. This is a company that listens to its consumers and it's really nice to see that these days. I doubt you'd get the same level of genuine concern from other app makers on the amazon market. I don't plan on it, but if I were ever to purchase another android capable device in the near future, I would buy this app again. Not so much because I need it but because it's nice to have, and this is a company that I do not mind supporting at all. If you enjoy reading comics, I promise you'll love this app. This one is number 2 on my kindle fire favorites list, right behind the kobo reader, and if you give it a chance I'm sure you'll love it just as much. Heck, $3 is a steal. I'd gladly have paid $10.

Best Manga/Comic Reader Available

I absolutely LOVE this app. Hands down, bar none - I recommend it to everyone.

I bought another manga reader before this one, based on reviews and recommendations I'd heard from the manga community - but I didn't care for it much. It didn't work right on my tablet and it had features I didn't want, while missing some features I was looking for. It just seemed over-complicated in all the wrong ways and unfinished in a bunch of other ways. Plus, it force closed on me repeatedly, despite having the app stripped down to only the most basic functions.

So I decided to try ComiCat, despite having not heard of it before I bought it. Am I ever glad I did!!! This app is perfect in just about every single way imaginable. I couldn't love it more if I tried!!!

For starters, it finds and loads my CBZs really quickly. Great! Secondly, I was thrilled to see that you can choose from the folders your CBZs are in to load into the catalog. Awesome! Now I can organize my manga/comics by author or genre or whatever-I-want and load up custom catalog views of those folders just as easy as that. There's even a few different styles to apply to your catalog, to really make it your own. Great!

Reading manga is so simple and intuitive. It just works EXACTLY how you'd expect/want it to, right out of the box. Bookmarking is simple: Just press on the page and hold it until a menu pops up. Click "Bookmark" and you're ready to go! You can choose where to have comics open up and setting it to "Open at Bookmark" guarantees it'll open up where you left off if you've set a bookmark - and at the beginning if you haven't. This is perfect for me! Other readers always opened at the "last page viewed" - which means once you read a one-shot, it always opens on the LAST page of that one-shot, unless you clear the history. How annoying! ComiCat doesn't have that problem. It opens my one-shots on the first page EVERY time and my longer series right where I left off.

Other functions and features also do EXACTLY what I would want them to. I can lock the view mode into the orientation I want and set the reading direction and even crop margins and auto split 2 page spreads. Not only that, but the app works so smoothly and hasn't force-closed or frozen on me even once so far. ComiCat is just about PERFECT!

There's only two small things I wish were different. I wish that the drop down menu of folders to display was either auto-arranged alphabetically (or even better, by a customized setting, like the title view is in the catalog) or sortable manually. Nested folders would be awesome, too - but I can make do without them, so long as the folders are arranged in that list a bit more intuitively. As it is, they show up on the list in the order they were first picked up by the app - which makes it a bit hard to find the folder you want to view in the case of a large manga collection! Secondly, I'd like a function to "remove" a bookmark from a CBZ - maybe upon finishing the comic?

In all, though - this is an EXCELLENT program. I'll make sure to spread the word to other manga fans!

The Comic and PDF reader I needed

This is IDEAL for reading digital comic books--which is what I primarily bought it for--but it's also provided a bonus benefit of being a MUCH better PDF viewer for documents than the default fire tablet pdf reader. For some reason, PDF text comes out clearer on this, plus it can split pages if the document was scanned with 2 pages at once, making for a lot more natural reading experience.

The only reason it's not 5 stars is that it doesn't have the most straightforward or intuitive user interface. For example, the "turn page" and "pull up menu" commands are so similar you'll often turn a page rather than pulling up the menu like you wanted. It's also not always clear how to access certain features or what they do. Figuring it out by trial and error hasn't been too difficult, though.

Definitely a great value; I've gotten my money's worth for sure.
