Marie Lewis, Rochdale

“My class have reaped loads of benefits from using the programme and the difference in some of their reading skills has been dramatic."
Maria Andrews, Foundation Phase Teacher

"This is a fabulous game. I'm not kidding when I say that my daughter essentially learned all her letter sounds using First steps, with relatively minimal input from me! Great for parents to practise their letter sounds too."

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaches phonics pretty well

My 4 year old is spending more time on screens this year (thanks, 2020). He's always LOVED reading, but hasn't expressed a ton of interest in learning how to read outside of letter recognition and asking how to spell random words. He is really into playing games (like his papa), so when this went on sale (for free!), I jumped on it FAST. I want him to start understanding the connection between letters and sounds so that he can stop memorizing every book in the house (after we've read them a couple of times in a row, at least) and start reading them on his own.

So far, it does NOT disappoint. There are a couple games that are hard for me to figure out, but the four year old didn't seem to struggle as much as me (is this the first sign that I'm now officially old????). He sometimes acts like he doesn't understand the actual reading portions of the game, but when he's not thinking about it, he almost always gets the right words/letters/sounds. This game is made by Usborn Books, which is a British company, so the voice actors have a British accent for anyone who might struggle (or dislike, I guess?) with accents. I personally find it amusing and like the international exposure for my kids.

I'm not pressuring him to read right now (at least not on purpose), but this has been working pretty well so far for my expectations. He already had played the Super Why ABC letter game and this one feels like a good 'next step' for casual/fun reading learning exposure.

For anyone who wants a quick summary: the player needs to go through a series of games in order to fix their broken spaceship. There are several different kinds of games with different skills. You start by collecting sounds that match letters and move on to collecting words and sounds. You also collect "trickies" (sp?) that are words that maybe aren't fully phonetic. The gameplay seems right-on with my four year old boy's interests, but I think it would easily appeal to boys and girls from 4-7 (cute monsters, cookies, spaceships, jungle runs, treasure).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good teaching tool, could be better
Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019
My son is three. He absolutely loves "Teach Monster," as he calls it. If he could review things, I'm sure he would give it five stars. However, he's three and can't write yet.
I'll start with what I like about this app:
1. It's fun. My son loves the games.
2. It helps kids learn phonics.
3. Kids love to create their own monster (this includes my older kids).
Things I don't like about this app:
1. It's repetitive. Every level seems to have the same games.
2. It doesn't give the letter and then the phonetical sound for each letter, it only sounds them out phonetically. This is the biggest flaw of this app, I think. I get that the purpose of the app is to learn phonics, but still.
3. Some of them are mispronounced or unclear in the pronunciation. I find myself correcting the app on occasion (if I'm remembering correctly, it's only 2-3 letters).

Overall, I would recommend it, but know that this isn't an app you're going to want your child to use without you nearby to help.

3.0 out of 5 stars These bugs needs to be fixed
Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024
I was trying out the new version of my childhood game, Teach Your Monster To Read, and there were a couple of bugs.
1. On "Practice Mode", when I select a game, randomizes my character.
Also, this bug happens on the "10-Minute Adventure".
2. On 10-Minute Adventure, after 5 minutes, it crashes.

Fix this!

There are also other bugs that I am too lazy to list.
