Sight words are words in English language that do not have a simple one-to-one correspondence between sounds and written letters, and therefore have to be learned “by sight. ”

Reading skills are important throughout life, and learning the basics is the secret to future success in reading. The basic foundation of reading lies in phonics- letter blends, sounds, the alphabet itself- and the recognition of sight words. Sight words are simply words that appear commonly in text, but they don't always follow standard phonics rules. Thus, even children who are proficient in phonics may struggle. Sight words simply need to be memorized.

It's no secret that typical 'drill and skill' exercises used to encourage memorization can be boring. The Sight Words Games app from 22Learn aims to make the process more exciting.

First of all, I work as a tutor and have been looking for an app of this kind for quite some time. Kids love technology, and these types of apps are great for the modern student. Many of my students face difficulty in reading due to poor phonics skills and inadequate sight word recognition. We need to cover the basics before moving on to higher reading levels and other skills, and apps such as this one make my lessons more exciting.

When you open the app, you can play as a guest or create your own character. Basically, there's a selection of 'file saves' to choose. The fun begins right away as the player gets to customize their very own avatar. I LOVE this! Creativity and personalization, right off the bat. Kids love to feel in control and eat this up. You can even design yourself as a scary monster! High scores are tracked between users, and kids will love the competitive element this creates whether they are challenging their previous scores or those of peers.

From there, an intuitive menu pops up. Simply tap a game to begin! I was very impressed that this app includes grade level difficulties from pre-k-grade 3. I can use this one app for multiple students in the same way parents can entertain multiple young children of various ages with it.

The games are terrific. Flashcards are easy to see, appear on a fun background, flip quickly, and, best of all, they pronounce the words when you tap them!! This is VITAL! By hearing the words AND seeing them, more connections are built. It also makes it easy for kids to play solo and learn the words correctly- something they just can't do with traditional flashcards. For those who are looking for more excitement, there's a bingo game (it calls the words aloud, and you tap them to eventually get BINGO- awesome for learning!), memory (match words by flipping over cards, memorizing their positions), and spelling (sight words are often on spelling test lists, so this can easily boost grades there).

As if that weren't enough, the gears game lets players drag gears onto a machine by matching the words said with their written complements. Word machine is a similar concept but says words one at a time and gives multiple choices. This makes it a great stepping stone to some of the more independent activities.

I have tried other apps and this one is the most comprehensive sight word app I have found to date. Don't even waste your time (and you WILL waste time- trust me) with other apps. Kids will love the fun space themes, happy characters, and the encouraging words from the professional voice actors. This one has it all, and you are sure to get way more than the $1.99 price tag suggests. Avoid further expenses and strife due to poor reading and give your kids this fun boost!

Sight words is an excellent value for only $1.99! I couldn't believe how many games there were included in just one app! Upon hitting the start button you can select different players (up to five) and create your own avatar that is either a boy, girl, or monster. From there it brings you to the game option screen in which there are six different games including the word machine, spelling, bingo, memory games, gears and flashcards. Below the games your child can select word levels from Pre-K to 3rd grade including noun and all words, not only can you choose the difficulty but you can choose words spelt with all capital letters, a mixture of lower case and upper case and finally all lower case.

The Word Machine is addicting. The red machine says a word in which you have to match to a list of words below. Upon choosing the right word the machine repeats the word again to help your child remember. The machine then praises your child. Level two becomes more difficult, instead of choosing the correct word from three different word choices, your child then has to choose between six. If getting a word wrong the word simply disappears, it doesn't criticize your child but only helps to guide your child towards the right choice. At the very end of level two, a screen saying "great" or "your the best" appears praising the child for doing a good job.

Spelling was centered around connecting pipe sections to create one long pipe which helps to make dog treats for the dog at the right bottom of the screen. The word is pronounced and then the child must drag the letter and drop it towards the top of the screen to spell the word. After every word there is praise and the letters are pronounced when your child taps on them. At the very end there is a big exciting screen saying "great job". If your child loves animals, this game will keep them busy for hours.

Bingo contains a list of 16 words in which you must tap the appropriate word to the word announced. When choosing the appropriate word the word disappears and a small alien appears on the space like background. Upon matching a row of words, bingo appears and leads to a screen of praise once again reminding your child of the great job they did.

Gears involves matching different colored gears with words on them to their appropriate "speaker" which pronounces the word your child must match it to. Your child then drags and drops the word onto the correct speaker until the screen in filled with gears. Upon completion the gears are turn together and the game than praises your child.

Memory games shows your child a word and than you must tap on the "speaker" to match the appropriate hidden word that you child had to memorize. As your child hears the word he/she must tap on the hidden options. If they choose the wrong word "x"s appear in red but if they choose the correct word green check marks appear. Your child continues to match the words until completion where the game praises your child on the great job they did.

While playing Flash Cards you child myst tap the cards to hear the words that appear. Your child can swipe left and right to see different cards. This isn't really much of a game but more of practice.

Overall Sight Words Games are colorful, exciting, full of motion and most importantly fun educational games. I highly recommend this to anyone around children grades Pre-K to 3rd. Your child will have a blast while learning when playing this game

Grandson (K5) enjoys this one. Some of the other sight word apps are too boring to hold his attention, but this one keeps him engaged. The sound effects don't drive me buggy so that's a plus. Also the "reward" for getting the words right is unique and different. instead of it just telling you "good job" it gives you a little interactive animation that you get to control, and create the character etc. So it's a break in the "study" part of the game, and interesting enough to keep him wanting to play. The graphics are bright and pretty as well.

A great way to practice sight words!

We just started using this product and immediately went for the full version. This has instantly become my daughters favorite app to use. Since we are getting more in depth with sight words I wanted to find another way to reinforce them on her own time because right now we mainly use flash cards. This app allows you to review sight words from pre-k through 3rd grade as well as nouns, through different games that increase the child’s spelling, listening skills, and memory and they also have flash cards. At 2.99 you can’t go wrong. This app is pretty amazing and super easy for little ones to use. Would definitely recommend!
