5.0 out of 5 stars A proper movie player for the Kindle Fire
Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2012
Since the release of the Kindle Fire it has been missing one vital application, a proper video player. The "gallery" viewer that comes with it is woefully inadequate for watching your own movie files. It doesn't show the name of the video file you're selecting, so you're left guessing which video you're about to watch. Once you have found the right video, there's no way to adjust the brightness of the screen of the volume without either exiting the video to change brightness, or bringing up the menu bar to change the volume.

Now at last we have a proper movie browser and video player! It lets to assign your own images to your videos, so when you're browsing them you know what they are. I like to use the posters for the movie because it looks nice when you flip through them. MovieGallery can also create its own images by taking a snapshot of the video. This also works well, as it tells you the name of the file above the image so you can still find the video you are looking for.

When it comes to playing videos, things are as you would expect. It has on screen controls for volume and brightness which is perfect. You have a time slider for moving through the video quickly and buttons for moving to the next video or back a video. There are even options for zooming in on the video or stretching it to make it fit the screen.

Speaking of which, there are two other pieces of software that you might want to try made by "tools4movies" that are PC (Windows) based. The first is software that turns your videos and DVD's and Blu-ray's into videos that fit the screen of the Kindle Fire perfectly. I've not seen any video encoders that can do this before. The second is a small piece of software that can stream video files that you have created from your PC to your Kindle Fire, so long as you are on the same network. This is great because it gets around the small storage space on the Kindle Fire by allowing you to store videos on your PC. Support for doing this is built into MovieGallery and again I haven't seen something like this offered by anything else before. You can find both of these by googling the name of the developer.

So to sum up, for $2, you get the only video player for the Kindle Fire which looks nice and allows you to play videos which are stored on your Kindle Fire. As well as this with a small amount of fiddling you can watch videos which are stored on your PC! I've been waiting since the release of the Kindle Fire for a proper video player, and now I have one which offers even more than I had hoped.

    Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very frustrated with this app.
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2013
I first downloaded MovieGallery Lite from amazon apps onto my daughters Nabi 2, it worked great. She just turned 2 and was able to operate the app easily, so I purchased the full App. However, 2-3 days later the tablet keeps freezing or locked on that app, crashing the nabi 2. I know it's the app because its the only new thing on the tablet! Very upset I spent money for this frustration!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bought this so my 5 year old daughter could find the movie she wanted.

she has a Nabi 2 and it works great. i can remove and password protect all of the buttons that would allow her to delete or change anything but still make changes myself. i like this app so much i have started to use it myself. i have also purchased tools4movies DVD Catalyst 4 to convert my DVD's so i can put the DVD's my daughter watches at home onto her tablet.

The one feature i would like to see would the ability to put tv series in one folder when looking at covers. if i have full seasons of a few tv shows i have a lot of covers to scan through if i'm looking for a movie, and if you go to fast it jumps to the end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great for some videos

Great app for wide screen movies. If you want to play videos with a standard frame (old TV shows), it stretches the display and distorts things. The zoom feature does not work right for the Kindle Fire. It is very frustrating and at this point, I have to use something else for playback. Once this is fixed, I'll change my rating to 5 stars. App has great potential, but not ready for Kindle Fire, yet...

Been about a month since purchase and still hoping for an update to make this usable for the Kindle without video distortion...

3.0 out of 5 stars Works great... once you lock down the settings with a PIN.
Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2013
Updated 1/21/13: Downgrading to 3 stars because soon after my son got his tablet back this weekend, the issue started up again DESPITE having the password protection on the settings. I finally figured out what is happening and now know how to fix it without having uninstalling (after having to do that twice in the last 2 days). Once a movie is playing if you tap lower on the screen, it brings up the play options (play, pause, ff, etc.). It also has brings up 2 circles flanking either side of the movie box... one on the left for brightness and one on the right that is for volume. These controls slide up and down. Apparently my son tries to move the bottom (left/right) movie slider to rewind and ends up hitting the part of that slider that is right at the bottom of the brightness slider and it goes dark. I now can try to hit around the screen in the area of the brightness slider to try to get the display back on.

Very frustrating problem for such a simple app. At least I FINALLY know how to fix it but cannot prevent it without disabling all touch controls during playback which won't work for us since he likes to ff through certain scenes that scare him.

Updated 1/14/13: Thank you so much for the comments. Before seeing these I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the app 3 times with the same results... it would work great for a while then go black. Yes, I could still hear the movie playing if I pushed on the black screen and I could hit in the area of the home button to get out of it and use other apps just fine but THIS app was black. The last time I was sitting next to my son when it happened and remember seeing a settings window pop up at some point. Wondering if that had anything to do with it, I reviewed the settings options (after reinstalling again) and saw that the app had a setting to lock the settings window with a password, which I tried. I have not had a problem since (tho my son lost his Nabi privileges for a while so it hasn't gotten a lot of use lately :) )

So I have now upped my rating to 4, with a suggestion that parents use the settings lock that the author provided. And a suggestion that the author might want to look at a way to make the brightness option a little harder to get into since this issue has affected so many different peoples' experience with an otherwise helpful app.

I downloaded this to my son's new Nabi 2 five days ago. Loaded a bunch of his movies and it worked great through this morning. But clicked on it this evening and just like another reviewer described, the screen just goes black. I tried turning the Nabi off and on but still black. Saw there was an update and thought that must have been the problem but no change... still black. My son was frustrated that we couldn't play the movie he 'earned' and I'm frustrated that I spent all the time to set it up and now not working.

Please fix!!!! Will update my rating if fixed.... would totally recommend if it worked.
