I am delighted with this sewing machine! it is fast and smooth at the same time, I can sew very well and it sews thick fabrics and thick hems with ease without the #16 needle breaking, I love that. The needle threading is great and very easy once you check the attached guide, and the visible winding to easily see the spool, all this makes my seams finish faster. It is true that it only has 32 stitches, compared to the brother that has 60, 100+, but at least it has the essentials for all sewing, and it is much more resistant because it is completely made of steel. Another important thing that I want to mention is that I was undecided between this machine and another computerized brother machine that had many stitches and quilting, but then I remembered that everything that is a computer, well, it suddenly fails and I think that if for some reason it doesn't I already have a guarantee, it will be expensive to repair it, instead a mechanic like the traditional ones, it will be very easy for a technician to repair it. I love it and I highly recommend it even for beginners, I consider it to be the best option.

First of all I am a man, so I don't give up and write a negative review when I can't figure out how to use the needle threading feature.

That reminds me of my ex-wife. Back in 1988, she was going to make all kinds of nice clothes for our daughter, like her cousin's wife did for their three daughters. She told me to buy her a sewing machine and she would learn to sew. I doubted it, because she was lazy, so I bought the basic machine (Singer Model 4530). It did the basic sewing for normal users much like these Singer Heavy Duty machines, but not made to sew heavy thicknesses of fabric or something like leathers. As expected, she let the machine sit for months never signing up for sewing lessons. One day I came home from work and she was furious. She sad the sewing machine was no good. I ask her what happened. She told me her neighbor wanted to sew some sheets together to make long table cloths, for the tables for her daughter's wedding reception. She said the two of them tried all afternoon to thread the bobbin and it wouldn't work. I asked her if they read the directions in the instruction book. She said, "NO!". I told her she needed to read the directions. She got furious with me. You see she was one of those women who would never admit she was ever wrong, and if you pointed out she was wrong she would get even with you forever. She refused to ever learn to sew, from that point on.

I knew how to sew. I self taught myself how to sew, because I needed my pants pegged, which was the style back when I was a teenager, and my Mom worked 16 hours a day to provide for me. She could sew, but to peg my pants would take up her Sunday (her one day off a week), and wanted that day to be with my Mom.

This has turned out great for me. I grew up to be an outdoorsman in Idaho. I am an Collegiate All American in the field of Archery. I was Candidate for the U. S. Olympics, so knowing how to sew didn't make any lessor a man any more than learning to cook so dinner was ready when my Mother got home from a 16-hour day.

Now back to the Singer sewing machines. I took that standard duty Singer 4520 sewing machine my ex-wife cursed and put it to work. Of course, I hemmed my pants to the right length, and shortened the sleeves on my shirts, but I did more than it was designed to do. I have made several vests out of heavy duck and canvas. I have made bags for heavy duck, canvas, ballistic nylon, and leather. I have made holsters and knife sheaths out of canvas, ballistic nylon, and leather. I have sewn thicknesses up around 1/4".

After 28 years, my good old sewing machine is skipping some stitches, and showing some signs of wear. It sews well on regular fabrics it was designed for, but I build survival equipment for outdoorsmen. Skipping stitches and having to re-sew thing just won't do. I bought the heavy duty model, and have tested it finding it to be an excellent machine, plus it sews thick fabrics and leathers. I have ran the test.

I love my new machine. There are fantastic tutorials on Youtube to help you learn how to use your new machine. You can download the manual for free and print it out on your printer. Best machine ever! Easily goes over denim and leather too! ( Use Youtube tutorials they are so helpful)

I had to have this machine serviced about a month and a half after I bought it. I take most of the responsibility for this, mostly because I tried to sew through a particularly thick section of vinyl. HOWEVER, there's a few things I'd like to mention in the hopes of helping out folks like me who are looking for a first, domestic sewing machine.

Negatives-
1. This machine did not come with a paper user manual.
I'm ok using a PDF as a manual, if just given that I have my cell phone with me any time I'm using this machine. However, the manual is for several machines in the "heavy duty" line, so not all of the pictures are accurate to this machine specifically. Also, the PDF is set up so that one page is in English, then the next 3 pages are reproductions of the English page in various other languages, so it is very difficult to navigate the PDF by page number, even going off of the table of contents.
2. The user manual is not comprehensive.
This is my first domestic sewing machine, so although there is a flyer in the package which shows you how to thread the upper and lower tensions for the first time, there are still a bunch of stitches on the machine which I haven't used and are not in the manual. There is a stitch guide on Singer's website, but it is all images which you must then click to get a basic description. Basically, it feels like I have the figure out length, width, and tension for about 75% of the stitches on my machine on my own. I wouldn't really have a problem with this either, were it not for the fact that just getting the timing fixed on this machine starts at $60, which makes me reluctant to mess around with settings.
3. Not actually "heavy duty" by a lot of definitions.
Essentially, it seems a more accurate description of this is something along the lines of, "Heavy [Domestic] Duty". As in, the machine has handled materials like vinyl and canvas for me, but the timing went completely off pretty much immediately after hitting a single section of vinyl which was twice as thick as the rest. The folks at the repair shop said that I shouldn't even be doing vinyl or canvas at all on this machine, and that pretty much anything I might consider heavy duty should be done on an industrial machine.
4. Not a ton of accessories.
It seems like common practice for manufacturers to only include the bare-minimum of feet. You get four feet with this machine, which is great, but there are a lot of other little accessories which it seems the manufacturer could have included extra or spare, just for convenience's sake. Stuff like the spool holders and bobbins. Maybe the bobbin case cover.

Positives
1. Easy to use once you've got the basics.
Takes less than 30 seconds for me to reset the thread to begin sewing again. Automatic threading tool is great. Bobbin case is easily accessible. Seems like all the switches and dials and levers are manual and easy to find.
2. Plenty of features.
While I mentioned earlier that the machine may have too many stitches for me as a beginner, it also has more directly useful features like the automatic buttonhole setting and the button sewing setting. I already mentioned the automatic threading tool. The machine also has an LED light built-in, which is nice if just because I shouldn't have to worry about changing it nearly as soon as I would have to if it were an incandescent.
3. Sturdy, yet portable.
Really the biggest reason I went with this machine in the first place, and it has not disappointed me in that regard. Metal frame and stainless steel surface in the sewing area make me feel a whole lot less anxious about using this machine in general (I'm a big guy with big, shaky hands, and I haven't managed to poke myself with the needle or scratch the stainless surface or knock the machine over... yet). I work in steel and can imagine the sturdier frame also contributes to less frequent timing adjustments, but I don't know that for sure. It came with a basic cover and has a carrying handle, which made it relatively easy to get to the repair shop.
